My top 10 films

Film watching is more or less a thing of the past for me, but i still enjoy them in memory, these are precious, and very close to my heart, for the spirit they were made in, not always perfect or masterful, but a certain something that is magical and could have only happened in this medium.

1. The Death of Maria Malibran -- Werner Schroeter shows intoxicating tableaux upon the theme of death, no one used opera to my liking more than Herr Schroeter, and there's some campy elements here as well.

2. Fruit of Paradise - Vera Chytilova's follow up to her massively appealing Daisies is imo the better work, a kaleidoscopic fever dream re-imagining of the Adam and Eve story, so many quirky moments, it's like a more lovable version of El Topo.

3. Birds, Orphans and Fools -- Juraj Jakubisko's love triangle film is something to behold, from the intricately composed opening, to the general look of it, where all the buildings are bombed out, and people living there, having a fun anarchic time before feelings complicate things.

4. The Color of Pomegranates - Sergei Paradjanov's vision of a poet is a singular work with moments of music combining with image in such a breathtaking hypnotic manner.

5. A Woman Under the Influence - John Cassavetes' searing look at a unique marriage is thee preeminent American drama in my books, the 2 leads are like lightning bolts!!

6. Berlin Alexanderplatz - Rainer Werner Fassbinder -- this is the first major change in my top 10, i would normally put In a Year of 13 Moons as thee RWF film, but i cannot deny this epic it's place here, when you experience it, it's like encountering something darkly divine.

7. Walden - Jonas Mekas - this is Mekas at his most rememberable, a love letter to the 60's subculture.

8. Origins of the 21st Century - Jean Luc Godard - his 60's decade was unbeatable, but i choose this superb short film with intoxicating montage editing.

9. Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome - Kenneth Anger - Mr. Hollywood Babylon takes us on a hallucinogenic Satanic Halloween costume party, where the elixir of the gods is some sort of sparkle dust

10. Lilya 4 Ever -- Lukas Moodysson's film here is my pick for streaming favorite of all time, this is one of the most downbeat excruciatingly depressing experience you can hope for, and i LOVE that Rammstein song that begins and ends it, the film cuts out the beginning part of the whole song, i prefer therefore the film version, more immediate and frantic, more like an alarm call, but the sad thing is the alarm comes way too late, you can only look on realizing what a piece of crap life can be.
