An ongoing list of The Criterion Collection with selective notes
I am absolutely obsessed with this company, the gold standard in home video distribution. Criterion specializes in art house classics, art house is a term open to interpretation, one could say they are films for a smaller audience than mass entertainment films are. It is something one can be extraordinarily snobbish about, and for some it can be off putting. I take extreme delight however in it all, and wish to personally list here as much as i can in one post, i remember a long list i did and it cut out around 300, so i won't be able to list all of the Collection here. Of note too, is that some titles are OOP, i'll make note of the ones i'm intimately aware of being so, and for titles i don't feel a current abiding interest in will be left noteless. The numbers are the spine numbers, and some of the delicious box sets are not numbered. May this raise awareness, and potential new members of The Criterion club of film fanatics. It also grieves me to say that Criterion is only easily accesible to America and Canada, with limited distribution to the UK, and increasingly more difficult in other parts of the world. For many of the releases there are alternatives for UK releases which i'll when i know and care deeply about each will point out when i get to it in the list.
1. Grand Illusion - OOP, seen once on TCM
2. Seven Samurai - might get this in 2021, pricey but worth it
3. The Lady Vanishes - will need to get it from US Amazon or straight from Criterion, or some other selling source
4. Amarcord - i have 2 editions, and soon a 3rd in the new set, yayy
5. The 400 Blows - 2 editions, a stand alone and in the Antoine Doinel box set
6. Beauty and the Beast - i just have the bare bones Essential Art House edition
7. A Night to Remember
8. The Killer - OOP
9. Hard Boiled - OOP
10. Walkabout - i just have the old edition, and i hear there is a recent superior version from UK that trumps CC's re-release.
11. The Seventh Seal - i have this thrice, and the best is the 3rd in the big set.
12. This is Spinal Tap - i have a non CC edition that suits me just fine
13. The Silence of the Lambs - i should get this sometime, it has LOTS of extras.
14. 15. 16. Samurai Trilogy starring Toshiru Mifune, i may never get this set, it seems to be lacking in the special features department
17. Salo, or The 120 Days of Sodom - i've got the re-issue on dvd, proudly, some people wouldn't be so proud.
18. The Naked Kiss - have a putrid ugly cheap and crappy version of this great film by Sam Fuller.
19. Shock Corridor - have the old edition
20. Sid & Nancy - have a non CC edition, great film by Alex Cox
