So I went to go see "It Ends With Us" tonight. I wasn't sure I would like it, from the vague trailers.
I had seen a lot of people talking about how Blake Lively was promoting it more as a rom com, and the director/her husband in the movie was being more serious about the fact that it is about domestic violence.
I'm pretty sure that is PR move, à la "Don't Worry Darling", and I can almost see why someone would be upset with Blake for not kinda warning the audience what they are in for.
At the same time, I'm glad that what they are doing is getting butts in seats. It is actually an impt movie to see.
The woman next to me was sniffling throughout, and at one point ran out to try not to sob too hard....I could just tell.
At the end of the movie, I said, "Hey, I'm really sorry if this comes off nosey or anything..but are you okay?"
She said she had just gotten out of an abusive 6 year relationship, and that she realized it had to end when her 5 year old witnessed some of it.
I told her that someone had been there for me in a movie theater once (I didn't get into it..but this kind elderly woman prayed for me..I was watching a movie based on the book of Hosea..this was right before my full hysterectomy, when I was still processing that I would forever be childless..and the woman in the movie miraculously had 2 kids when she didn't think she could..I didn't know the credits were about to come up, and I was doing the silent, but very empirically fugly, cry).
I got to tell this woman that she is incredible for leaving that abusive situation for her daughter. I didn't want to make her uncomfy, and she had a supportive girlfriend with her..so I kept it brief.
But I was pretty touched by that interaction. I hope she knows just how incredibly brave she is.
