Apparently, it's a companion piece to Oppenheimer, in that it's about two men irrevocably changing the world through their actions. The underlying theme is of the crucial foundation of both the ancient and modern reliance on the charity of strangers. In ancient Greece, once you'd left the safety of your home and community, you'd be at the complete mercy of strangers taking you in and offering you shelter. It is encompassed in the ancient Greek concept of "Xenia" (which Nolan calls "Zeus' Law"), which represents hospitality and generosity. It's a primary social contract that Odysseus breaks through violence and hubris (causing him to metaphorically change the entire nature of Western society) - that familiar idea of "do unto others as you would have them do to you."

However, there's a counter argument that the "do unto others" code stems from a later Christian doctrine, whereas Homer's original poem dealt with a fear of the gods. Effectively, Homer preaches "treat strangers kindly because they might be gods in disguise." That presents a fundamental moral difference between the Christian code, which stems from the pure desire to be good and honourable for its own sake, and the Homeric idea of doing unto others because you fear retribution if you inadvertently mistreat a god in disguise.

@Richard65 Yes to all of that. It has other themes too. You should see it. Its a very good movie that is almost great.

@Burnley123 I'm waiting to see it at IMAX when I can this week. I think it deserves to be seen at that scale.

I liked the cyclops guy 🥰

Haven’t seen it yet. Did you like Oppenheimer? I wanted to like it more than I did.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Bumbles Yes.

I mean, Obessey is a good movie and worth seeing. Parts of it are shockingly good but not perfect, which is why I think it's a flawed masterpiece. Still a compliment. I am a Nolan fan, but IMO Oppenheimer is slightly better.

I have yet to watch it, dammit. In this country we have one cinema every 1M people at this point. All booked of course 😑

All masterpieces are flawed :)
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Waveney Yeah but also no. If you see it, you'll get what I mean.

3 hours is too long to sit in a movie theater many years ago a long movie like this had an intermission so you got a break but its all about $$ now

Elon Musk hates it (before even seeing it) so I assumed it must be good 😃

If it brings new people to a shared literary heritage that is all that matters.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@SunshineGirl No. Elon hating it is all that matters!
