I have a theory on the Shawshank Redemption's ending

That there's a moment during Red's parole hearing where red disassociates, and everything from getting approved, being out in the world, finding the treasure, and going to Mexico was all a fantasy, it's all in Red's mind. For two reasons, the first is that the further we get away from the stamp the more fantasy like or dreamlike it becomes. Colors get brighter, the tone shifts and at the very end it absolutely feels and looks like a dream. And the second is what Andy said about how he dealt with being in solitary confinement, that he just escaped into his mind and listened to music. I think Red did that instead of dealing with the crushing reality that he's never leaving. BUT, that just how I saw the ending. The director even said himself that they really do meet in the end.

Keep in mind, when Red left prison, he was still depressed. He even said the only thing keeping him from killing himself was the promise he made to Andy. So it's not like he has the parole hearing and then everything is dreamlike and he's seeing the world as he wants, he's still depressed until he makes it to Mexico.

You could be on to something. It doesn’t matter what the director thought, it matters what King wanted us to believe. That director I believe also did the Mist, which had a completely different ending than King’s story. Shawshank does kind of end to easy and quick. Imagine finding that specific rock and even finding Andy on the beach. King has been known to have trouble ending his stories. But if you’re correct, then we wouldn’t have the classic “Brooks was here. So was Red.”
It legit says brooks was here and red

🤔 Seems plausible ..

I think the increased colour saturation is part if indicating that he's out of the nightmare of the prison. The great thing about films/movies is that we can all bring something different to understanding them - makes them worth discussing after we've seen them. 🙂
