No subtitles, no dubbing or nothing. Just as the movie as it was made.

I just did. I couldn't follow every word, but the story was clear and I loved it.

Yes, once it was a Korean war history film with the same reaction as you had. Then I hit English subtitles and watched it a second time just to learn the history of that war. I liked it both in the Korean native tongue and English subtitled version.

Have seen it with and without subtitles and dubbed over in English. Watched it the first time without translation and enjoyed it even without knowing German. It's the best submarine movie ever made.
