I'm a Kubrick fan. I saw it when it first came out and watched it again few months ago. It was far short of his best works. I look at it as a series of interesting scenes very, very loosely tied together. It was filmed beautifully in true Kubrick style with hot and cold motifs and a heck of a lot of Christmas trees. The characters were very Kubrickesque and were interesting in themselves .

I would marginally recommend it.

I watched it a couple of years after its release, because my wife now ex, wanted to watch it. I found it quite boring and had a difficult time keeping my eyes from rolling to the back of my skull.
Now mind you, we had just watched two other movies beforehand (Batman Begins and Wedding Crashers, if I remember right). It was a rough watch for me, cause I was so tired and it was also a long movie as well. I may have to check it out again if my brain can will it so.

It's an interesting rabbit hole, Kubrick was a master, wholly committed to his craft which could make him hard to work with, I believe he knew some secrets that the elite didn't want to be known, but nowadays it's like who cares anymore!!

I don't know if there's anything to it, but there's a theory he was using an old novel from the 1920s to send a veiled message about Epstein Island.

Clues people are putting together to reach that conclusion include the fact that he died right after the premiere and that there was no bonus footage. There's always bonus footage that accompanies a Kubrick movie.
