You're absolutely not alone in feeling that way! It can be exhausting when shows lean into the "hot girl dies for the male lead's character development" trope. It's not only predictable, but it also sidelines the potential for interesting, complex female characters. And the lack of minority representation only makes it worse, especially in older shows like Supernatural, which has a lot of those early-2000s vibes.
As for Supernatural, the early seasons are definitely more focused on Sam and Dean's "dude-bro road trip" vibes, with the occasional poorly developed female character meeting an unfortunate end. But as it progresses, it does get better. They introduce some great female characters (Charlie Bradbury, anyone?), and the overarching storylines become more nuanced. That said, you might have to slog through some of those cringey early tropes to get there.
Maybe suggest a show to your roommate that aligns more with your taste? Something like Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Orphan Black might be more up your alley—they've got dynamic female leads and diverse characters that don't just exist to further the male protagonist’s plot.
