OMG. That is one of my favourite movies ever! I love it. I refuse to read the book bc I don't want my perception of the movie changed, but yeah, it was my fav movie for many years. Then Avatar happened.
Will always love Contact with Jodie. Incredible achievement.
Carl was such a good man too, he was kind and his eyes always shone with wisdom and compassion.
I miss his face.

@LunadelobosIAMTHEDRAGON Go ahead and read the book, they're both near identical, and the book will also help clarify some of the movie scenes as well.
Dr. Sagan was a pure scientist, his lectures are phenomenal, and my favorite snippet of his is the Pale Blue Dot. Neil DeGrasse Tyson must have Dr. Sagan spinning in his grave.

@NativePortlander1970 YES, he was a pure scientist and his motives were pure. You hit it on the dot!
I have to google Pale Blue Snippet. Thank you.
I will NEVER not consider Pluto a planet and B I don't like Neil's EGO, or something like it?...
I am always comparing the two in my mind in my heart and it's not always conscious, even. Of course Neil is brilliant and eloquent and so on, but for me, FOR ME, Carl was just on another level, I can't explain it. ...It's like in the movie A Beautiful Mind , when Crowe's friend says it's the difference between genius and most genius, but in this case it's just that Carl for me had *IT* and no one else will ever.
Thanks for suggesting I read the book. Oh, I have had it for decades on my shelf... LOL.

@LunadelobosIAMTHEDRAGON You're so very welcome :) Pluto will always be a planet, and Tyson's ego is the prime reason why his fellow scientists cannot stand him, he acts like he is never wrong, he also sold out by becoming "everyone's favorite astrophysicist:, oh please 🙄 Indeed, I put Professor Sagan on par with Einstein, Newton, Gallileo, Hawkins, DaVinci, and others, that Tyson will never come close to.
@LunadelobosIAMTHEDRAGON One snippet Tyson obviously missed.

@NativePortlander1970 Wow.
It takes me to that courtroom when Dr. Arroway (Foster) is filled with humility, she is deftly and fervently trying to explain, trying to make them ALL understand, to feel what she felt during her voyage...((and since they are not Betazoids, a Star Trek joke) that remains her hope) : That to me, is one of the most incredible scenes in any movie, ever.
Thank you, I really needed this. I have to google me some Carl and just see his twinkling eyes and smile and I will feel better.
Thank you so much!
Yes. He lacks humility. That's it. That's why I never find him to be able to hook me into anything he says, I always am just lackadaisical at best. VS Rodney McKay (of SG Atlantis fame) who IS also a total Ego maniac but he IS humble/does display humility, if seldom.
Rodney is the best nerd EVER. Period. Bar none. He portrays that character with aplomb and ST Atlantis would not be the show it is, if it lacked Rodney. Rodney is the pivotal character for me, on his shoulders rests the series, more so than any other character, whether by accident or intention.
And the episode, called Shrine is one of the best Sci Fi episodes of any show, ever. WOW. Amazing. I may have to watch it while I eat.

@LunadelobosIAMTHEDRAGON Exactly why Professor Sagan wrote that scene the way he did, humility, Dr. Arroway forgot what her father taught her and had to be reminded. You are so very welcome :)
Here is one lecture that always puts me to sleep.

@NativePortlander1970 Actually, I am watching this now, while I feel my family and I am about to eat too :D ..I can't wait to hear him speak!
@LunadelobosIAMTHEDRAGON Enjoy a Most Awesome lecture :)
@NativePortlander1970 Thank you.

@NativePortlander1970 Tyson was a student of Sagan and worked with his wife, Ann Druyan on the Cosmos reboot.
As for Pluto, Sagan always stated that science is self correcting. When new evidence presents itself, the old must be discarded. We now know about the Trans- Neptune bodies. Pluto so happens to be the largest.

@BlueSkyKing Okay but I don't care about hypotheses and stuff in this case: PLUTO IS A PLANET. That's my belief, and I happen to like it, it makes me happy.
I don't GArat's tiny behind if no one agrees.
IF I will be the ONLY ONE PLUTO ADVOCATE marching, I am fine with that.
Okay, thank you :))) LOLOL...I needed that laugh....

@NativePortlander1970 I just finished his speech. It's pretty inspiring and I agree with almost everything he said...
Demotion
... that is real...@LunadelobosIAMTHEDRAGON Professor Sagan has always been inspiring :)
@NativePortlander1970 There is one aspect, where he and I are in sharp disagreement, and it's immutable: He is not a spiritual person. Both he and his wife, Ann Druyan, were not spiritual.
Ann, in recounting the last days of Carl's life:
Ann, in recounting the last days of Carl's life:
"Contrary to the fantasies of the fundamentalists, there was no deathbed conversion, no last minute refuge taken in a comforting vision of a heaven or an afterlife. For Carl, what mattered most was what was true, not merely what would make us feel better. Even at this moment when anyone would be forgiven for turning away from the reality of our situation, Carl was unflinching. As we looked deeply into each other's eyes, it was with a shared conviction that our wondrous life together was ending forever."
@LunadelobosIAMTHEDRAGON Professor Carl Sagan was all about pure science, religion and spirituality is the antithesis of science and gets in the way of true exploration. If you noticed in the movie Dr. Arroway was rejected due ro her Atheism, and Drumlin chose to become an opportunist to worm his way in, while in the end Hammond still chose Eleanor because of her pursuit of truth. Look at how the church persecuted science, specially Gallileo and DaVinci over their pursuits, because their findings were contrary to religious dogma.
@NativePortlander1970 Here is the thing. MY own spirituality is mine, no one else's and it's got zero to do with anyone else, or any religion.
I don't justify it to anyone.
And science is science and I do believe that science one day with be also about spirituality because spirituality, unlike, religion and all that bad crap that can potentially come out of 'religious zealots', well, here is the thing: spirituality is not dependent on anyone to EXIST. It just is, whether you feel it or not. It doesn't need your money or your faith or your monuments, etc. It is not about things.
When science is ready, it will get there...It may take many years but I know it will. There can be no other logical conclusion :)
As the good Reverend said in the movie
I don't justify it to anyone.

Logic can't even touch it.
Amen to that :)@LunadelobosIAMTHEDRAGON You have the quote misapplied, faith has no logic because it is based on the lack of evidence, it will never be proven. The pursuit of science is to discover and prove evidence, that is why so many scientists dismiss religion and spirituality, religion and spirituality cannot be proven.
@NativePortlander1970 I don't need you or a book or any person to agree with me, it is my spirituality: No one can touch it.
And that's fine about the quote.
Take care and thanks so much for amazing memories and really great conversation. :) ✨
