All depends on what floats your boat.
Personally I try and find things in every era.
That way there's always something to pique your interest and you don't dismiss anything great just because it's not from the last ten years.
Example:
The seven Samurai ~ Akira Kurosawa - 1954
Bullitt ~ Peter Yates - 1968
Close encounters of the third kind ~ Steven Spielberg - 1977
Scarface ~ 1983 - Brian De Palma
Clerks ~ 1994 - Kevin Smith
Amelie ~ 2001 - Jean Pierre Jeunet
Etc
