What long running TV show almost didn't return after its first season?

According to an interview with Jaleel White, Family Matters was facing the possibility of being cancelled after the first season until Steve Urkel became a regular cast member.

The first season they were bext to last in viewership.
Putting the board together, they took the hit shows and put them on the board, leaving a group of shows to decide whether to renew or cancel.
The head of the network saw Cheers, picked up the piece and said "I've seen this a few times .. and I like it". It went on the board, but a couple of other shows with higher viewership were canceled.
From seasons 2 through 11, Cheers was one of the highest rated shows on TV.
