When someone buys a bottle for your table, what does that mean?

I just saw it on a tv show. Is that a rich person thing? I feel like it communicates, "Im rich and Im watching you."

I've never actually seen that happen, but I'm guessing it means whoever bought the bottle is trying to make a positive impression on you and is interested in getting to know you better.
