Realistically, what we know as old movies are just the ones that were good enough that people remember, the ones that stand the test of time and persist because they were good or meaningful. They made a lot of films back in the day, and a lot of them were just not very good, so no one bothered to preserve them. Same can be said about modern films. Give it like 50 years, and people will have a few from this era that really stand out as good stories, and not just blatant money-makers.
That said, I like a good mix. I tend to prefer older films, but there are a few from the last few decades that I'd call classics.
