No wonder I watch less television these days

I sometimes watch ABC World News Tonight (USA) with David Muir
This program is very frustrating, as many times there will be one news item shown, often less than one minute duration then it is off to more commercials.
Is this how the show operates in the US?

Many times there are ten commercials in a row. These television station must be making so much profit from commercials.
We have three major commercial channel in Australia and all three of them run Home Shopping shows for hours overnight.

Usually, the opening segment will be long. That of course makes them have to make subsequent segments shorter, but the breaks will still be the same: 2 minutes, 2.5 minutes, sometimes three. If they really hate you, they'll do a 2 or 2.5 minute break, then a mid-break "bumper" that is also an ID (World News continues in a moment)...and then another sadistic series of ads about hemorrhoids and erectile dysfunction...another 2.5.
