@helenS those along with The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari are amazing works from that period. In many ways European cinema was really outpacing American in terms of subject matter and techniques.

@helenS of course a lot of American cinema beginning in the 20s benefitted from the post war depression and the subsequent rise of fascism in Europe when many filmmakers came to America
