Did anyone else who watched "Codename: Kids Next Door" when they were young think Number 3's real name was "Cookie?"

It took me until I was 17 to realize that she's Japanese and her name is actually Kuki.

It was my favorite show as a kid, or at least one of the favorites. I didn't think about it that much but sure I assumed it was Cookie too. I thought she was Chinese.

@DrSunnyTheSkeptic I did too, but there's a few hints that give away specifically that she's Japanese.

Her last name is Sanban. The word san is Japanese for "three" and ban means "number." So her family name literally translates to "number three", which was her code name.

We meet her parents in one episode and their names are Kani and Genki Sanban. Kani means "crab" and is a reference to Mr. Sanban's ornery and short-tempered nature, and Genki means "energetic" which is a bit of irony, because Mrs. Sanban is very stoic and straight-faced.

So the Japanese names give it away. There's also a few scenes in which Kuki herself gets so angry that her eyes start glowing orange and her teeth become sharp, and her ears stick out to a point. This is intentional; the show's animators drew her this way to resemble a mythical Japanese demon creature called an oni.

@BlueMetalChick How witty of them with those names.
Such nostalgia, reminds me how I used to put a colander on my head pretending to be one of them when I watched those cartoons

@DrSunnyTheSkeptic Number 86! Fanny Fullbright, with her makeshift samurai colander helmet 😂

@BlueMetalChick Peak of the 2 x 4 technology! I always wanted to be like number 4. Wallaby may not have been the smartest operative but he was one of the bravest and strongest, I wanted that which I lacked the most.

@DrSunnyTheSkeptic And that broad accent made him sound like such a badass.

@BlueMetalChick All that was missing from him was yelling "crikey!"
