I’m rewriting the lyrics to “Gives You Hell” by The All-American Rejects

One of the OCD symptoms I suffer from is called stuck song syndrome. I’ll hear a song and it can get stuck in my head for several days. If not even a week at a time. Until I hear a new song and it gets stuck. I can listen to the song five times in a row. Sing it out loud. Listen to a different song and sing along with it. Do all the things and it’ll still be stuck in my head. I can go to sleep and wake up and the song is still stuck in my head. It gets maddening. So now I am rewriting one of the lyrics to the songs that have been stuck in my head for this last week. I will post a video to the actual song below so if you want to hear the tune or are unfamiliar with the song, you can listen to it.

🎶 I wake up every morning with a song stuck in my head and it makes me wish I was dead. And you’re probably all wondering why I haven’t tried an SSRI.
Because the thought of taking one makes me wanna cry.
Yet all these OCD symptoms are so scary that I feel like I could die. 🎶

🎶 When I get these repetitive thought loops it really gives me hell it really gives me hell.
All these intrusive thoughts really give me hell really give me hell.
And all I really do is wish I was well.
Because all these intrusive thoughts really give me hell really give me hell. 🎶

I thought everyone got songs stuck on their head. What's the difference between normal stuck and OCD stuck songs?

(Trying to figure out my diagnosis here)

@Queendragonfly this article can explain it better than I can [image=https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4723199/]

@DisarrayedNightshade

Thanks for the link.

"A 40-year-old man with OCD mentions annoying songs during a period of stress. These disruptive songs are present day and night, and cause severe insomnia. The more he tries to suppress them, the worse it gets, and his fear of losing control reinforces this. Short tunes continue for hours, usually songs he hates. The patient is exhausted and his life is negatively affected by the earworms."

This explained it well. No one normal feel this kind of struggle with it.

I'm sorry but it's so ironic that your username is a song lyric , was it intentional?

@Queendragonfly I am just like that 40 year old man but I’m a 36 year old woman. I feel his pain so much 😣

Yes my user name was intentional I really do want to break free 😢

@DisarrayedNightshade I'm so sorry. I might have a mild version of this not sure. But when it's really silent I can hear people sing or hear music and it won't stop. Me and my boyfriend think it's stress symptoms cause it haven't happened when I'm relaxed. Same if the fan is on. I hear music. in the fan.

@Queendragonfly interesting. I am very sorry that you experienced that. So it’s more auditory and not in your head? Because mines fully in my head. I don’t have auditory hallucinations and hear music auditorily unless it’s actually being played. I just have intrusive thought loops that go through my mind that will not stop. And from my understanding from what I’ve read, people with OCD this stuck song syndrome is considered an intrusive thought because it’s unwanted and involuntary. But you can’t stop it no matter what. And trying to repress it makes it worse.

@DisarrayedNightshade I think it's in my head cause my boyfriend hears a fan when I hear music.
DisarrayedNightshade · 36-40, F
@Queendragonfly I think this is something you need to talk to your doctor or therapist about. They will be able to help you figure it out. It sounds like it can be frustrating and even scary sometimes. I am very sorry that you experience this. I hope you’re able to find some relief from it ♥️
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@DisarrayedNightshade It's not a problem it happens so rarely. But this post made me think of that .
DisarrayedNightshade · 36-40, F
@Queendragonfly ahh I see. Well that’s good it’s not a problem. Mines becoming a problem. It’s making me feel like I’m go insane 😞
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@DisarrayedNightshade Do you avoid music or do you try to distract with new music?
DisarrayedNightshade · 36-40, F
@Queendragonfly both. Sometimes I will avoid music. But lately I’ve been switching over to instrumental music, stuff without lyrics, so it won’t get stuck in my head.
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@DisarrayedNightshade Interesting. And you don't create your own lyrics or start humming the melodies?

I dream up new songs in my sleep.
DisarrayedNightshade · 36-40, F
@Queendragonfly oh yeah I do both. I mean I made up my own lyrics to the tune of that all American rejects song. I also make up songs using the tune and replacing the words with something to do with my cat lol 😹 sometimes I have fun with my OCD but for the most part I hate having this condition
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@DisarrayedNightshade It's fun to do covers with new words!

Me and my bf loves to mimc eachothers hummings and singings and we always add cheese, ducks, swans, pine trees, and Santa's as lyrics that rhymes to the melody in the song. Great covers 😂(or we use dirty words 🤭)
DisarrayedNightshade · 36-40, F
@Queendragonfly lol that sounds fun 😆 I added you so maybe we could keep in touch. I’m almost always down to chat and make friends ☺️
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@DisarrayedNightshade *Runs the other way* 👀

No I'm joking. But I wanna let you know that I'm not a typical always texting always responding modern phone addicted person 😂 and I get offline periods where I'm no where available and just full of my own struggles or needs a mental break.

So if you're cool with that. Sure!
DisarrayedNightshade · 36-40, F
@Queendragonfly oh trust me I know exactly what you are talking about. I do and am the same. I’m not offended if people don’t respond back right away to a message. I know we all have lives outside the internet. So I understand.
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@DisarrayedNightshade Yeah us with mental struggles must be extra cautious with how we spend our time. Since we're running low from start.
DisarrayedNightshade · 36-40, F
@Queendragonfly yes totally 💯
