I Battle Depression

--Suicide isn't about wanting to die--

Someone can have all the potential in the world. They can be a prodigy with incredible talent. They can have a lot of other things too - money, beauty, and a thousand pieces of gold. But if they're not happy inside...

People don't lose their desire to be alive because they don't have the potential to accomplish things in life. They lose the desire to be alive because they lose the hope for happiness. They're sad all the time. They hate it - and they eventually reach a point where they no longer have hope that things will change. Dying seems like the only way out. It's not about wanting to be dead - it's about wanting to change a miserable inner-situation, and only seeing one way to do it. If you want to convince a suicidal person not to die - then you have to convince them that there's another way out.

And that's the thing - there IS another way out. Sadness doesn't come from nowhere. No emotion does - especially not the ones that stick around for a long time. There's always a reason for it. There's always an element of it that the suicidal person doesn't understand. Something or someone in their life that's dragging them down. Or some experience from their past that they haven't let go of. Medications can help mitigate the sadness while they search for longer term solutions. There's always a way out besides dying.
