Okay we are in special school, that brands us as thick to start off with, and we know we don't always cope with the world in the best way, we do try, and we do have problems with a lot of adults who assume we are stupid or bad, you know sometimes people talking AT us is like hearing a foreign language we get overloaded, we just cannot process everything coming at us, and getting angry and yelling at us stresses us more and lowers the chances of us understanding. We are not the smartest kinds in school but we aren't stupid either, for a long time we let other people convince us we were stupid. That's stopped now, we won't take it any more. With a bit of humanity from others we cope most of the time.

Seeing where the fire engine sound came from helped us because we always thought the fire fighters we met were on every fire engine we heard back then. Don't assume someone with autism can make the same links as norms, just because a friend is a policeman might not link to the noise overload. We used to instinctively cover each other's ears at loud noises or protect each other. If someone is yelling at us does not make it easy to cope with just cos we can see where the sound is coming from it is sensory overloading too much too quickly to process.
