I Have a Child With Autism

My eldest son is 11 years old and he started 6th grade this year. His transition to middle school is NOT going well at all.
grrrrrrrrr.

At the end of last year, me and his teacher put in work to make the transition smooth. It did NOT happen.

His ipad that he uses for communication was NOT there. For whatever reason hes running off a lot and over all they just can't handle him.

He tests people and runs off if he doesn't respect you. I arrive and then he listens to me.

Its the most frustrating thing in the world. I have an appointment next week to meet with some people. I just told my husband today whats going on.

He just said sooner or later, they'll give up and send him to a school with more security, for bad kids. Or also, for special needs kidz with more aggresssive issues.

I feel like they are especially incompetent that they can't even admit that they just might not be the best fit for my son. They just say that they can't bend over backwards for one child. Whatever.

Update

So far so good, I've had to pick up my son 3-4 times from school. Oh boy.

His aggression has been increasing. At the meeting with his teachers we agreed to give it one quarter and then look at other options. He has regressed sooooooo much and so much more aggressive than I've EVER seen him.

Well, yesterday he choked his teacher and is now suspended for 3 days. GRRRRRR.

So I told the teachers to go on ahead and look into other schools that can accomodate him better. And they agreed because his aggression is getting worse and its constantly getting worse.

So thats whats going to happen for now.

Your son is not being naughty or anything its probably he is having trouble fitting in because of the autism and the communication issues.
Your son is a victim of the autism not somebody who needs to be sent somewhere with more security for bad aggressive kids the things you told me he sounds really cute.

Tranisition will be hard I am sure and the school will have to be very patient with him but hopefully he will eventually learn to fit in and maybe it will even help the autism

Just one question have you got the iPad in a very secure case one of those very rugged ones designed to absorb impact from being dropped and everything also put a screen protector on it

If the kids can break the TV and hoover they can break an iPad so you need to make it as rugged and childproof as possible

the ipad is only at school. we have been thinking of getting the kidz ipads, but first i'm gonna research and swee what protective gear i can put on it.

im atm 20 and i have had a mild degree of autism, and just wanna say the following. be there for ur child, and do what u can to help him out. fitting into the school enviorment has not always been easy, but for me it has been a lot better after i finished school and started working. the "problem" with autism is that its never the same, and thus i cant help you out other than by saying this. hope is goes well and the best of luck
arcanedeath
in that case im not shure if its gonna help or not, and due to the fact that it seems like he has a stronger autism than me (also different) im not shure if i am the best person to help out, but hope that it goes well whatever you do, and good luck with whatever happens

Sounds kind of what I was like at his age
I have always been stubborn and when I was a kid I was very hyper sometimes I also loved things like dinosaurs I just loved the idea that they were big and had sharp teeth that sort of thing
darktippedrose · 36-40, F
yes indeed. very hyper. has a super hard time sitting down, even for food. even his favorite food lol. but i love him. hes my baby.

yep, sadly the last sentence reveals the truth. autistic children are unique, and if a school can only work by turning kids into further bricks in the wall it's not the right one for your child to go to. they already are hinting that all they focus on is control over a child and reducing the child's potential of disrupting security and order. your child's academic achievement and potential, that what they should be looking at, seems to be all forgotten by the school?
darktippedrose · 36-40, F
well they are basically saying they can't do all this work for ONE child. That he is detrimenting everyone else. seriously. my son is NOT the only runner to ever grace middle-school.

Make sure his IEP is very specific and followed. If the IPad was an accommodation in his IEP and they failed to have it they are breaking the law.
You have equal say. Call an IEP meeting and bring his therapist with you or written orders from his doctor.
darktippedrose · 36-40, F
yes, the speech department went through some changes last minute so apparently, they had NO clue that he needed an ipad. grrrrrrr.

Sounds like they're already making excuses!
Schooling for any child is a nightmare! And if your child is unhappy then it's clearly the wrong place.!
Having worked with children in the care sector most of my life, I know where you're coming from!
Do you have any support from either fellow parents with autistic kids or maybe a charity?
Would be good to get support even if it only gave you a chance to vent to people who understand!!
darktippedrose · 36-40, F
my kidz also get services , so i tell the care coordinator whats going on. she knows my kidz and loves them.

We had to move my son to a special needs school when the mainstream school could not cope with his needs, but in a lot of ways it did help my son, mainstream school was starting to cover topics like WW2, so the gap between the children and my son's abilities was widening.
All I can say is that you know what is best for your child, fight for it.
darktippedrose · 36-40, F
thank you! yes indeed. I'm not liking them at all.

My youngest son is 17 and he is on the spectrum. School has been a battle until he started high school. He is a JR this year and he does fairly well. It's a tough battle when people don't even try to understand these kids. I hope things work out for you. You're not alone.
darktippedrose · 36-40, F
so far so good, today is the FIRST day that he has lasted in school all day. thank God.

Hang in there sweety..

I've taken care of many clients with autism. It's not fun. Just have to be more patient than ever.

I'm sorry you're going through this. It sounds like they're not taking responsibility for considering his needs, and instead making it seem like it's unreasonable to put in the work.
darktippedrose · 36-40, F
we put all this in last year. ughhh. so freaking pissed
Saintlysinner
My son is five and I've battled with his school all year for similar things. It's so frustrating. I'm sorry that you are having to deal with that.
darktippedrose · 36-40, F
