I wonder where this was, as padded cells and straightjackets declined in the 50's with the advent of psychotropic medications.

There's not a lot of mental health ignorance these days. Like any field, data changes with new research, but you'd be surprised how much we understand. But if you were placed in some kind of padded cell, then you were with the wrong outfit from the start.

Paxil is a well-known antidepressant with basic and temporary side effects. Trazodone is also a long-used mild antidepressant that can greatly aid sleep problems without being mind-altering like some well-known brands. Thorazine, the brand name for chlorpromazine, hasn't been available on the market since 2005, almost 20 years. Chlorpromazine is used to treat mania, delusions and psychosis, as with BPD or schizo-affective disorders.

Cutting loose once in awhile is great, but if you need these meds, there's a routine and schedule to follow. Never lose sight of that.

Been there, had to ride it out, trying to preserve my mind.
I was not there as a loony but as a druggy.
Weird experience, but not as weird as me.
Learnt a lot and especially about me and human nature.
