What's the deal with sandwiches having names?

Seriously I don't understand. Are they namd after people? Is it to be pretentious? Why does it seem to be an exclusively American thing (from the few times I've seen it)?

Advertising in a sense -- keep the well-known coming back to your restaurant by naming a sandwich after them. Or be the chef who created it.
