Hearing noises at night

Sometimes, when i wake up, it's because I've heard noise(s). My house is very old and creaks at times. This morning I distinctly heard paper being screwed up twice and became fully awake each time. My partner, who hasn't great hearing, sometimes asks me if I got up during the night, as he heard noises. I wonder if we imagine them as we're half awake?

Maybe you should set a camera that detects motion usually with motion there is noise unless it’s something unworldly and if that’s the case it will find a way to let you know
