My therapist thinks I'm neurodivergent

Shock horror

Ayyy another disability to add to the list. Step aside epilepsy, we've got a new friend now

Neurodivergent is a cool sounding word. Sounds like a YA sci-fi novel.
NickiHijab · F
@MisterMxyzptlk the name is divergent.
Neuro, divergent

It isn’t a disability or even a diagnosis. It’s a blanket term to say your brain works differently. Seems everybody’s brain is different though…so we all can be described as that.

Don’t live by labels. Just love being the unique person you are.
NickiHijab · F
@Pinkstarburst Objectively speaking, it is a disability because the functioning in parts of your brain is weakened, particularly the prefrontal cortex. That doesn't make it a negative thing, it's a different way of processing.

I think it helps acknowledging the difference.
I don't love myself any less because of it. It's helping me make more sense of myself
@NickiHijab I would be considered this because I have mental illness. My friend would as well because they are dyslexic. I suck at math but excel in art and hubs can do math in his head but cannot draw a straight line.

All I’m saying is our brain differences make us individuals. Yes, we have to adjust, but isn’t that how life works? It isn’t a disability. It’s just how people are designed…to be different.

My best to you on your new, adjusted, journey. I know you will succeed!

@NickiHijab I have close neurodivergent friends and they're goddamn amazing and their being ND is a part of that.

But definitely a disability I have an easier time getting by than they do. Even in a perfectly equitable utopian society executive dysfunction is not an advantage.

I've been told the same thing. I think it's a safe bet that most of us who hang out on SW are neurodivergent to some degree or another. 🤷‍♀️
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@sarabee1995 The post is about divergence. You haven't seen the Divergent film series? Tris is the main character.

The Divergent Series is a feature film series based on the Divergent novels by the American author Veronica Roth. Distributed by Summit Entertainment and Lionsgate Films, the series consists of three science fiction action films set in a dystopian society: Divergent, Insurgent, and Allegiant.

@KiwiBird Omg YES!! 🤦‍♀️ I loved the Divergent series, books & movies. Don't know how I didn't pick up the reference!!!
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@sarabee1995 Now that is more like the response I was expecting 🤣🤣🤣🤣

You would have to find someone you were confident could define neuronormal (neuronondivergent) before accepting anyone's description of neurodivergency.
Random but as a training therapist yourself do you ever self diagnose ,even subconsciously ?
NickiHijab · F
@PepsiColaP a lot of the training is uncovering parts of yourself and peeling off several layers to see yourself in relation to others and yourself.
So there's no escaping that, it's a pivotal part of the training. Probably the most difficult shit I've done so far. With that and the psychoeducation, it's natural to see parallels and draw links into diagnosis that's come into awareness but even the most experienced therapists need help mapping out and regulating with an external person.

So yeah, subconsciously I do draw links to things brought into my awareness but I also know I can have traits and just traits without it being a diagnosis. Not everything needs to be pathologised, other times there's enough traits for it to labelled as such and it helps identifying it.
@NickiHijab thank you for the detailed explanation, interesting to learn how part of the training is personal therapy.
I agree with the latter paragraph a lot. I believe the access to information in regards to pathology in conjunction with a lack of adequate education has led to a lot of labelling, internal and external, that is most often wrongful and harmful when certain things are just traits that can be commonly found in many ppl without the diagnosis
Epilepsy could be a part of it. Again, I'm around if you feel a need to talk to someone. Not that I'm all aware of every aspect...
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
Has your therapist been binge watching the Divergent films?
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
Ooh what flavour?
NickiHijab · F
@CountScrofula the spicy one🥵

Still pending actually.

She wanted to focus on it in more length next session. I have an idea but I'm not gonna throw anything out there just yet without an assessment
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
@NickiHijab Totally get it. I've had a couple of friends discover they're on the spicy end of things recently. Criminally underdiagnosed in women.
Sorry about that. I think, in one way or another, we're all falling apart.
In addition to my several uncomfortable maladies, I was just diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy. The bottom of my feet are burning. 🔥 We're all getting something. Ugh. 😕

I hope you do well with your issues. 🫂
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
I am sorry it’s another thing you have to overcome.
NickiHijab · F
@iamonfire696 I'm actually okay with it.
I think everyone that's neurodivergent in some way knows it, they just normalise it or mask it. Especially women.

It's validating when you get someone else that's also like nah you weird boo
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@NickiHijab I am glad you have such a good attitude about it and you’re right.
