If someone commits adultery on their souse, and their spouse commits suicide over it, what should the punishment be for the aduleror or adulteress?

If it's proven in a court of law that someone committed adultery, what should the punishment be? It boggles my mind how ppl think adultery should fall under the list of things the government grants as freedom. It's illegal to refuse to bake a cake for gays, but legal to betray the one you love most? It's illegal to litter on the streets but not commit adultery on your one true love? It's illegal for police stations to torture serial killers to get information but legal to cheat on the one you love the most? In the ninja world, those who break the rules are scum, but those who abandon even one of their comrades is worse than scum; your spouse is your comrade number one.

Now, for all the nitpickers who will not comment on the heart of the question, I know the laws I mentioned are not universal, and some places don't make those things illegal. I also know adultery is technically illegal in some places, however, those laws are not enforced.

Oh for Christ sake. You want there to be legal punishment for adultery? Why don't you move to Saudi Arabia?

If a person commits suicide because their spouse cheated on them, that's on them. They made the decision to commit suicide. The government should not have the ability to tell you that you can't violate a completely made up and meaningless set of rules around romantic relationships like marriage.

@BlueMetalChick it's their choice of they kill themselves.

@KaiserSolze I'm a swashbuckling left winger who staunchly believes in a strong central government and even I think it's absolutely unacceptable for the law to dictate what you can and can't do in your personal life.

@AgapeLove I think it should be illegal. I said this years and years ago on EP.

It's a crime of great harm. When I sunk so low as to revenge cheat that was soul eating and that's why I hate cheats and cheaters. It makes people do terrible things.

If it was ille less people would do it.

I do also think marriage would need to change ie be renewable after so many years though so people don't feel trapped and can leave marriage easier but while you're in that contract it ought to be illegal to cheat.

@AgapeLove A communist hellhole doesn't have more socialization. That's like saying "You want a new pair of Jordans? Why don't you go to a laser tag arena?"

I think the government SHOULD dictate peoples morality
Through that single quote, I just lost an enormous amount of respect for you.

You think a vow of commitment to someone is meaningless?
Yeah. Especially a vow like marriage. You say some shit, a guy in a dress waves a book over your head, you kiss someone in front of a bunch of idiots sitting on wooden benches. You think that carries meaning? You can make vows to whatever the fuck you want. It means nothing. My sister and I took a death vow as children. Neither of us honored it when the time came. See what I mean?

Social constructs are awesome and pointing out that something is one is basically the inverse of the naturalistic fallacy
When you acknowledge that something is a social construct and explain why you think adhering to it benefits us, you're doing something fundamentally different than when you pretend as if there's meaning in something that we just made the fuck up out of nowhere, usually for selfish reasons.

@AgapeLove Not really, no. Saudi Arabia clearly better represents your moral code because you think it should be punishable by law to cheat on your spouse.

I just laid out why I think that, why not tell me what's flawed about it?
It is flawed because the function of government is not social or cultural. The intention of a governing body, and of a social contract, is to ensure wellbeing in ways you couldn't necessarily do yourself. I can't construct my own power grid and public transportation system. That's why I rely on the government to do so. But I don't rely on the government to tell me I can't cheat on my husband or wife. I never would, but that doesn't mean I think it should be illegal.

You gave the example of a person committing suicide because they were cheated on. What if I called you an asshole and that hurt you so much that you committed suicide? Should I then be punished by law for calling you an asshole? Should we outlaw abusive profanity?

If so why do you want the government legislating against violating our rights?
Since when does the government legislate against violating human rights? We violate the fuuuuuuuck out of human rights every day. What rock are you living under?

Would you ever trust a person who told you they don't care about honoring vows?
Yeah. Because they sound just like me. If I want to honor an idea, I'll do it. I'm not gonna make a point of telling a person in a vow that I'm gonna do it. What's the point other than to set that person up to be deceived?

@AgapeLove
You have assaulted people for using their freedom of speech against you in a way you didn't like, so do you not have less self-respect because of this?
Give me a specific example.

And furthermore, do you even realize who you're talking to? You of all people know that I regularly tell people why they should NOT respect me, why they should NOT trust me, why they should NOT confide in me. I get angry at people for considering me a good person in spite of the lengths I go to in order to inform them that I am, in fact, a terrible fucking person. I've stolen from countless people, I've scammed and conned my way out of poverty, I've attempted to commit homicide multiple occasions, I was convicted for mail fraud, I technically raped someone at one point in my life. Of course you shouldn't respect me. Why the fuck would you? Because I'm pretty and I swear a lot? Are you a fucking idiot?

@AgapeLove It's a testament to how blinded by cult of personality you are that it took me admitting to intentional rape for you to finally realize what a piece of shit I am. It wasn't the homicidal fantasies, it wasn't the thievery, it wasn't the conning, the grifting, the racketeering, the penchant for physical violence, the time I tried to stab my best friend with a fucking bayonet, it wasn't the arson, the ridiculing of mentally ill people, the vandalism, the deformation of a grave...none of that. It was because I shoved a pipe wrench into someone's rectum that you finally changed your mind. Bro you really need to get over my charisma.

I dunno if I remember throwing a Popsicle at someone. I do remember punching a guy at a diner for saying stupid gross shit while I was trying to eat. And I don't regret that.

@AgapeLove You wanted to talk about your panic attacks. I'm incredibly open about myself, and I really, really like to talk. I saw no reason not to. What j told you was true about myself. I had nothing to gain by lying. I'm not a pathological liar; I don't deceive people for fun or out of compulsion. I do it for personal profit. If I can't make a buck by bending the truth, then I will be honest in every way. Hence why I tell you and others so much about myself.

@AgapeLove It genuinely upsets me when people like me on a level that's more than superficial. It makes me feel like I'm doing something wrong.
