A few of the older SW gents may recall getting all hotted up, ready to go out in the 70s

Top | New | Old
I never SAW a real person dress like that, not in the 60s or 70s. Sure, the stars on TV did, but like online personas, they weren’t real. Long hair, yes.

There wasn’t a disco within 200 miles of my house, so no wanna-be-John Travoltas.

I really embarrassed myself a couple of years after college graduation. I stopped at a convenience store and another car immediately pulled into the next parking spot. The car’s hood had massive long horns in chrome.

I was looking at a tall young man wearing a Sly-and-the-Family-Stone hat with a long bobbing feather in the band. He wasn’t actually that tall, but his platform shoes were extremely high. He was wearing a long faux fur coat meant to look like a tiger skin. It didn’t.

Against my own will I burst into peals of laughter. Apologizing while still laughing isn’t very convincing, but I tried.

Nope. I went out in the 70's, but I never looked like that or wore anything like that.
exexec · 70-79, C
@meggie Maybe, and I did live in the southern U.S., which tends to be more conservative in most ways.
gandalf1957 · 61-69, M
@meggie bell bottom trousers I think, sideburns and we wore velvet jackets and then leather jackets!
BlobbyMcBlobface · 100+, M
@meggie I think it was, and unfortunately it was completely devoid of style and taste, people looked like gyppos.
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
I was never hotted up, but alas I succumbed to flares and platforms for a period. All the fashions of older generations tend to become laughable, but this one was so impractical as to be more laughable the most. If I find a picture of myself looking like that… It will be burnt. 🤦

@FreddieUK

The man's top hat is funny, but I have always liked the women's hats of the 1920s and early 30s.

FreddieUK · 70-79, M
@Thinkerbell Only 40 years out. 🤣
Thinkerbell · 41-45, F
@FreddieUK

Yes, things had gone rapidly downhill by the '70s. 🤢
SpudMuffin · 61-69, M
Yes! My trousers had a lot less material in them though.
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
@SpudMuffin It was then, Brown platform shoes to go with it. How I didn't break my neck I don't know.
SpudMuffin · 61-69, M
@FreddieUK I'm impressed that you didn't break your neck! I could never manage platforms, I had to wear Doc Martens instead.
gandalf1957 · 61-69, M
@FreddieUK the platform heels - probably still worn by Tom Cruise and Jason Statham and shoulder pads too on set!
ArishMell · 70-79, M
Well, I did have a shirt slightly similar to his but the rest... certainly not!

I like the wall paper
When I went to the clubs in the late 70s, some guys were still dressing like this:

@bijouxbroussard i think they look more gentlemanly in your day. I have the exact same black and white tiles they are standing on in my hallway.
Sorry not a great photo, taken during decoration. But we kept the tiles.
Musicman · 61-69, M
I got my driver's license in 1977. I never looked like that. I wore blue jeans and a button up shirt when I went out. I definitely had the long hair though.
Musicman · 61-69, M
@meggie Oh wow!
meggie · F
@Musicman he played the guitar and piano accordian, and used to yodel too.
Musicman · 61-69, M
@meggie How cool! 😎
Unquestioned · 70-79, M
I wouldn't have been seen dead in an outfit like that. 🫤
meggie · F
@Unquestioned well history repeats itself with fashion, so you may see it again!!!
Denise61 · F
Oh my god that wallpaper is horrendous
SimpleMan2000 · 70-79, M
That was the height of fashion.
And that was just the wallpaper!
SimpleMan2000 · 70-79, M
@meggie That is a shame.
I have 5 rolls at home ready
meggie · F
@SimpleMan2000 no joke, it could be worth money. People now are doing their whole home in a certain era, and spending big money doing so.
SimpleMan2000 · 70-79, M
@meggie There is my retirement fund
lapels and chest hair.. with gold chains...
meggie · F
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout that was more 80s?
Lostpoet · M
That dude has to be about 78 now.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
Uh...no. Not in the '70s, not ever with that look.
