Some stuff from Nanori Land 🥔🥴

Today I wanted to buy coriander powder for my lunch ( I wanted to cook Molokhia 🥔🤤) I realised that there is an Iranian shop close by!! I went there, thinking that I will probably find coriander there, in addition to yummy stuff that I would probably like, and won't find elsewhere... OMG I loved being in that shop, too many spices and other things that I shopped... I got many things except for the grounds coriander which I couldn't find! O.o

I love drinking "laban" which is fermented milk, its familar/common name that some of you might know is Ayran or yoghurt drink which I find written on some of it.. I found it in some places since I came, but it is definitely not a common thing in most shops. I've been looking for it for a while now, and even that shop that used to have it, stopped getting it.. I found so many types there and bought one, and yet to try another!

I also got Turkish coffee which almost ran out , and got tahini candy too.. I don't eat that candy often.. Like literally once in a year time if not less.. But I have been craving it since I came here.. I noticed that, just because I know that it is not easily available everywhere, I start thinking of things that I want to have, even though before when I saw them daily in shops, I never bought them!!!

Like I also bought Za'atar Thyme which is a Palestinian blend that I haven't had in the house literally in years!!! Now when I found it, I was like, I MUST get that!! But I am thinking, I will bake something with it (I never baked before!!).

I also got spice blend that's used on yoghurt (or at least this is what I understood from what's written in Farsi)... I like to make Yoghurt with cumber, garlic, and I sprinkle dried mint on it.. I got that one and it tasted like mint, so I am guessing I was right..

I found Iranian chips and snacks that seemed to be old fashioned, and I thought to myself, baby @Nanori probably grew up eating those 🥔🥴

I think it was clear that I didn't understand farsi from the way I was looking at things, and when I went to check out, the man there kept asking me every time he checked something, do you know what this is?? Inside my head I was like; do I look like an idiot to buy stuff that I don't even know what they are!🥔🤷🏽‍♀️ Must be obvious on my face 🥔🥴 and then he took it to the next level and started explaining to me how to make yogurt with dried shallots step by step (or this is what I understood - I didn't even buy those, and didn't know that you can put them in yogurt).. at this point I thought, it must be clear on my face that I have a crush on Nanori, and now he is teaching me how to be a good wife 🥔🥴

Point of this long story, I am going back there I again!

I love to smell herbs and spices and try new blends. I bought some Moroccan harissa spice powder at the discount store, 6 small bottles, and it’s so good. Dipped hard-boiled eggs in it at dinner tonight.

The Iranian yogurt drink is called doogh. They sell it here in the Middle-eastern shops in plain and another type in mint-flavored….both good.

Za’atar blend is good mixed with ground beef or lamb and spread thin on flatbread and broiled for a tasty lunch. My daughter’s babysitter was Lebanese and taught us how to make that. I use flour tortillas but pita breads can also be used.

There is a spice in Iranian shops called Sumac powder, it is ground red sumac berries. Has a lemony flavor and is used on ground meat kebabs, gives a nice flavor.

@cherokeepatti I love using Zaatar in tomato sauce when making pasta, it tastes very nice! But really, you can do so a lot with Zaatar.. You can mix it with cheese too when baking and it tastes amazing!

You can find so many flavours from the yogurt drink (not sure it is Iranian, I think it is Turkish, but very popular in Arab countries that I thought it was Arabic), I used to drink one with cumin too.. But over here (Toronto), I am still exploring and finding out about these things.. I am sure i will be able to get them.. but not sure where yet, and maybe in areas that are a bit far where there are middle eastern communities..

Sumac, yes! Mostly used on beef when cooking certain recipes.. I don't use it often though but it is not like I cooked a lot up until now and I don't eat beef much anyway

@BitterSweetPotato I live in Oklahoma and Sumac is something that Cherokees have used here. There’s a Cherokee recipe for a drink that tastes like Pink Lemonade made with sumac berries and sweetened. Have to be careful & know which type of plant to pick them from. There is a plant called Poison Sumac that can break a person out in a nasty rash.
