In the UK, the word is frowned upon and is hardly used. I've noticed on here that Americans, particularly right wingers, seem to enjoy using the term in a derogatory fashion. Despite the social stigma that still exists, I think the UK is far ahead of most countries in recognising the rights of people with learning disabilities and stringent laws are in place to prevent the abuse of those people. Anyone who uses the R word is an ignorant moron. It isn't big and it's far from clever. If someone uses it to insult you, it says a lot more about them than it does about you.

@Shakealot ok I wasnt sure which R word you were referring to!

I don’t allow other people’s opinions to get to me. I don’t care if someone likes me or not and I don’t care if someone thinks I’m an R word (or any other negative adjective ). What is important to me is my integrity.

I was guilty too many times of using that term on others. For us the R word sounded like REE-tard.

Who cares what some other person says?

You can't control that.

You *can* try to control your reaction.

We don't usually use that word where I come from. I was told it was an Internet thing.

I’ve never been called that but if it’s an issue for you stand up for yourself.
