I failed to find a photograph of one, but a kitchen implement called a Tastee-Toaster" (or similar) by trade-name; for making toasted sandwiches.

It consisted of a pair of circular, saucer-shaped, aluminium pans about 4 or 5 inches diameter, hinged together at one point on the rim, with long handles opposite.

Put a slice of buttered bread in each pan, add the desired filling, close the pans rather like a scallop shell and clip the handles together; trim off the projecting spandrels of bread and cook on a gas ring for a time apparently judged by experience.

The results, which we called "Flying Saucers", usually filled with baked-beans or spaghetti in tomato-sauce, were a great tea-time favourite in our family.

Save the bread trimmings for making bread-and-butter pudding.

..

A few years ago I saw one at a car-boot sale. A woman picked it up, opened it, closed it, read the trade-mark without comprehending, asked the seller what it was. She was equally baffed! I explained it to them, for which they were grateful, but the lady did not buy it. I wish I had!
