Name a famous Book or Movie

That although the ending might have been perfect, you still would love one more chapter to wrap up a few things.
I could come up with a bunch but I did a paper back in HS with this as the subject and I chose Lord of the Flies.

The ending of that novel has been much debated. If it was actuality, the boys would have destroyed themselves before very long. The choice of the Deus ex Machina (Hand of God - or an element outside the fictional universe hitherto created, intervening) has been criticised because it forestalls the working out of the awfulness created.

It's a good exercise in getting youngsters to talk about weighty fiction writing.

No sequel in cinema, TV or writing has quite lived up to an original that has gripped me, unless it was written as part of a sequence in the first place. That's especially true of sequels written by different authors or, even worse, 're-imagined' to update them.

@FreddieUK been a long time since I’ve read it but would a rescue not have been expected at some point? Or is it just the way the the guy just appears that is the issue? It seems most books had that type of ending rather than a more tragic one.

@FreddieUK I was just reading an article about a real life lord of the flies with 6 boys in 1966 that were ship wrecked on an island for 15 months! They did much better than Goldings boys !

@4thdimensiondream I'm so glad. It was interesting watching the recent imaginative BBC serial (which I enjoyed for itself) in how the writer made explicit so many of the themes of the book and how relevant the polarised tribalism of those who wanted simple solutions and those who liked to work things through still is today.

The Maltese Falcon.

I just read a “sequel” called The Return of the Maltese Falcon by the author Max Allan Collins who wrote Road to Perdition. It was the perfect addition to the original book. It continues the story and answers a lot of questions. Very good read

@martinis00 Road to Perdition is one of my favorite movies. I wonder if he needed to get permission from Hammett’s family to do the sequel. I’m guessing yes.

@4thdimensiondream yes he did. He also writes the Mike Hammer series, saving private ryan, waterworld, windtalkers, airforce one, and the Batman comics. He’s one of my favorite authors

@val70 embarrassed to admit I’ve never read. Is this the one where he was imprisoned but escapees and becomes a powerful man seek revenge?
