The hardest part of rewriting a book

Is actually changing the plot. Obviously Im trying to change the reasons for the bad guy to do what he does but thats proved next to impossible.
Give me some ideas that would fit in with an urban fantasy setting.

They consult with a female spiritism psychic that mysteriously appears to them to locate the missing will that will clear up the mess. They partake and discover in a nude full moon cacao and psilocybin ceremony in a ancient mayan cave that the only way they will see it is over their cousin's dead body and maybe... even their own.
