It really depends on what you're doing. For everyday " daily life" a messenger bag style works well. Can carry a tablet, small power bank, sunglasses, and other things as well.
Taking care of my daily life needs is going to the grocery store, and farmers' markets spring/summer, so I keep a bunch of re-usable bags and soft case cooler in my car.
I use an Osprey Daylight Plus. It’s great for work or play and can handle a bladder if you’re on a long hike, bike ride, etc. it’s not expensive and Osprey makes great products. This size can be used as a backpack or it’s small enough to just toss over your shoulder.
If its books: a backpack. If its food or other goods from a store / retail location: the reusable bags I got for free from the auto mechanic...they're great: they actually have a solid bottom! If its bottles from a brewery: a cardboard box / beer case
I use a tote because of my work. I have to keep alot of records so I have to carry my paperwork, clipboard, etc, as well as my very small purse and miscellaneous items.
