Is Mid-60’s Temperatures with 25 mph Winds Good Weather To Go Swimming?
Today is the last day of school at the private school where the boy goes. They are supposed to go to the swim complex this afternoon and swim. I tried to tell the boy that it might be cancelled. It was cold this morning with the wind & 50 degree temps. I can’t see getting in a swimming pool for a couple of hours in that kind of weather.
@Bartleby It’s an outdoor pool, I doubt that it’s even heated at all, that would use a lot of energy as large as the pool is. Even so there will be 25 mph winds blowing over them which is a wind chill combined with being wet.

I mean it depends on other factors like how sunny it is + the water temperature + wave height. But generally speaking, I think that's a bit too cold and windy.
Edit: lol nvm, I thought it was the beach. If the pool is being temp controlled then I see no prob.
That does seem awfully chilly for swimming. But if the water is warm enough, it should be okay, so long as he's in the water. It's getting out of the water that's going to feel cold. 🥶
Otherwise, the water may be heated to make it tolerable, but if not, and if the overnight temperature dipped into the 50s it probably took the water temperature down with it.
There's probably a hypothermia chart somewhere on the internet to give a clue about what temperatures and conditions make it dangerously cold.
I've had a couple of swimming pool related jobs in the younger years. also water survival training with the military, etc. As an upper teen lifeguard and swimming instructor we were in the water by 9 a.m. in late May and I don't recall extended misery beyond the first splash. Also a few experiences with water survival classes in an indoor pool where the water at times was super cold but the air temperature was 75 or 80. Also I believe a few hotels had a combo indoor-outdoor pool with a divider wall and an outside temperature at near zero F and I remember ice crystals forming in the hair as soon as you popped up in the outdoor part.
I think you may have to just test the water, and make sure there's a way to quickly get out and have a big towel nearby. Also a "you first" strategy so you can judge by someone else's yelling before deciding whether you are next :)
@James1956 It’s jacket weather, not bathing suit & water weather. The boy thinks it’ll be OK, but he’s more warm-natured than most. Last thing I need is him getting sick for being out in the water all afternoon and the wind chill over him.
@Stereoguy I remember when I was a teen going to that same pool and it would be in the 80’s-90 in June and dip my foot in the water and it seemed so cold, would finally jump in and it seemed like a shock till I got used to it. I can’t imagine swimming in the temps of the 60’s.
