I hate this rare phobia of mine so much

Imagine having a phobia that triggers panick attacks when you're near the trigger.

Now imagine that trigger being next to every single counter at the store so you gotta see and smell it everytime you're in line to pay for something.

That's my struggle every time I go to the store bc they've all started placing their old bananas next to every counter. There's no way to avoid them.

The sight, smell, and even thinking/talking about them too much triggers me. But I don't feel like I can complain about it to the store bc I fear I'll be laughed at.

I hate it so much, but it's one of those things where I gotta "suck it up" apparantly 🤦‍♂

And yes, this is a genuine phobia of mine. I've avoided specifying it online in the past bc I know some asshats will be tempted to put images of that fruit in the comments. But I needed to vent now, so here we are.

@BarbossasHusband It has to be done in stages, or it won't work. The way professional therapists handle a thing like this is, they'll start by telling you that there's a banana in the next room and see how long you can remain where you are before you have to leave. They'll do that repeatedly, then move it a little closer with each session.

I don't know, though. If seeing them every day isn't helping, maybe you need to try something different.

@LordShadowfire my therapist didn't even bother trying when I told him about it. Stopped seeing him 7 years ago bc he'd done all he could for me and the rest is up to me (his words, not mine)

It may sound like I'm making excuses now, but I'm not. It's just me trying to explain how hopeless it feels.

I don't even know how the phobia started. All I know is I was eating that fruit as normal one day, then woke up with the phobia the next morning. No idea what happened during those hours between (where I was asleep)

@BarbossasHusband Hypnotherapy might be a good idea. Regress to that night and see if you can unlock whatever dream you had.
