Why do people get upset that people have no backbone?

I got scolded at so many times for not standing up for myself and letting people do what they want. My dad got annoyed with me letting people push me around. Even some teachers I had got frustrated with me letting other kids push me around. One teacher said, “And YOU to stop letting people push you AROUND!” With an attitude.
