There's a huge amount of suspicion and distrust on here so if I add someone I never expect them to add me back.

Hmmm. Not everyone feels that way.
Here we have a visibility setting that only our friends can see private posts.
And for some of us, our friends aren't a spontaneous add, they are people we have gotten to know .....and trust .
