How do you decide when to go to a visitation of someone who passed?

If I knew the deceased directly it’s a little more clear, but when it’s a relative of a friend I haven’t seen in a long time, I don’t wanna be awkward. I loathe visitations bc I almost always stick my foot in my mouth during such sensitive times.
