Table cleared!

What is this obsession restaurants have with clearing tables, without even checking to see if customers are done?

I eat alone. I am always afraid to get up to use the bathroom, because when I return, sometimes my table is cleared off! I get so pissed!

It is really bad at buffets. Because I must get up to get more food!

Today, I filled a plate with four pieces of pie, and left it on my table. I thought surely the servers would not be dumb enough to think I had left, with a fresh, untouched plate of pie.

I went to the restroom. When I got back my table was cleared, and a tall stack of dirty plates was there. One of them had my pie, now squished.

I got so pissed and bitched to my server. She said she could not tell if I was still there. I said do I need to leave a big sign?

I was so pissed, also because this happened to me twice only a week ago, at the same place, in the same sitting, but with a different server. She cleared off my table twice! And for that, all I had done was get up and get more food!

It has happened before that at this place, too.

I almost want to boycott.

In the future I will start explaining to my server what keeps happening, and to please wait until I say I am done.

I had to get 4 new pieces of pie. Gosh, I hated to see those squished pies go to waste!

Hurry hurry hurry clear those tables, chop chop! I need those tables!!!!

This happened to my nephew when I was dining with him. Fortunately, his food was retrieved, intact, after we notified the server.

I don't know what drives this. How hard would it be to make sure the customer is done with their food before clearing the table? Too hard, apparently. I do think leaving a big, impossible-to-miss "I'm Not Done Eating" note on the table might be a good idea at restaurants where it's a problem. Have it prepared ahead of time and be sure to take it with you when you dine-out.

@Rutterman

I have decided next time to just tell my new server what keeps happening, and that to wait until I say I am done.

On my way out I tracked down my server to say I was done now. She apologized again. I told her my plan for next time. She said she would remember if she served me again. Maybe. I had never seen her before today. But a lot of servers have been there for years.

When I found her on the way out, she had been talking with another server. This other server overheard our conversation, and when I looked at her I realized she was the server from last Saturday who cleared off my table twice when I went to get another plate of food. I went through three sets of utensils that day! This other server remembered me from last week. I looked at her and pointed and said she did it twice last week! We all laughed and they were nice and said they would remember.

I still want to boycott for a while. It starts out nice then when this stuff happens it ruins my mood for the rest of my day.

Sigh. First world problems. I just saw four perfectly good slices of pie get destroyed today. What a shame. It could have been dessert for four starving children somewhere. The people at these buffets waste so much food. It is horrible. I confess I leave some, but only because I am full. I confess I could not finish all my pie.
A laminated "I'm still eating" sign on the table should cure that problem.

I just have to learn to "hold it" until I am done eating.

I should just face the wall and water it and soil the carpet. That might get their attention.

At least at a buffet I can just get more food, a new soda, new utensils, etc.

Maybe go to restroom before you sit down to eat

I did! But it was a buffet and I take my time and had been there a while!
