How do I even handle this?

Got a notification from my bank that my credit card was charged $756.25 on Amazon. I'm here freaking out because I'm thinking someone defrauded me.

Nope..it's my kids! Took my card and went on a shopping spree 😑 I left my wallet on the countertop and forgot to take it up

They'd never do crap like this to their mom
My mom would have called the cops on me and let them lecture me but that usually works better if done immediately. They probably know you know by now.

You could
Take $700 worth of their things and say it's to pay back for their credit card theft. Then they have to earn them back. In real life if you steal you have to make restitution, pay a fine or go to jail.

Think of how you can teach them why stealing is wrong. You might also want to explain to them how credit cards work. Let them know that it's not free money.

@midnightrose Kids don't understand about credit cards though.

When parents take away the things their kids enjoy, the kids get bored and then start pestering the parents more. So the parents end up punishing themselves in the process. My parents never took my things away, probably for that reason.

But more on my own lesson in not stealing -

I did get grounded for a few weeks as well but getting a belt across my ass was all the motivation I needed to not steal.

I am now glad the whole thing happened because what if I had not been caught and got more ambitious about stealing? We know a thief is one of the most hated things in the world.
@CestManan It can be explained to them in a way they can understand. I assume these kids are old enough to read and write. They understood how to input the credit card information so I think they are capable.

Yes, it puts some some burden on the parents but the kids wouldn't just be sitting around, they'd be working to earn their things back.

I'm glad you went on to never do that again. However, there are many kids who were raised with the belt that the lesson doesn't last so I don't think we can say it's a fix all solution. It has its flaws, just like any other form of discipline.

I'm willing to put up with a bit of inconvenience to practice an alternative means of discipline I feel is more effective at teaching what I want to instill in my kids.

The poster may not want to take my advice and that's ok. He asked for advice on how to handle it, I gave my suggestion like everybody else.

@midnightrose One thing for sure - knowing how to use a credit card but not knowing it has to be paid back is what we call, "Knowing just enough to get into trouble"

Unauthorised transaction - get your bank to recall the money

@JustA So it’s simple - if Amazon say it’s too late to cancel because the order is despatching/despatched, then wait until the parcel arrives & refuse to accept it - in which case, it will be returned to the Amazon fulfilment centre. Under distance selling regulations, you have the right to cancel right up to & beyond, the point of delivery. There’s no way I’d allow those kids to get away with that. Get your money refunded, cancel your card & don’t give them your new card details

@BalmyNites it didn't go that far so I'll get my money back. I made them cancel the order and now they're all grounded.

@JustA That’s good to hear

@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout Fucker I was going to say, "Time to beat some serious ass" but you beat me to it.
Selah ·
I use to take my dads money all the time. What is he going to do? Call the cops? 😅
@Selah You’re lucky he didn’t beat your butt. 🤨

There's a simple explanation for this, punishment.
No more privileges.
Parents that separate or divorce always seem to think its acceptable to molly coddle their kids, then the kids grow and learn how to wrap their parents around their finger. With behaviour like pitting the other against each other.
It's important to treat them no different than if you were together.
Sure you separated but you have joint parental responsibility to raising decent people in society.

I'd have an open discussion with the mother about it and come to an agreement. You need this person a ally not an enemy.

I've read some of your other posts. And I can only assume your daughter sees you as a bit of a soft touch after the perfume incident. (which wasn't your fault, but clearly had more to do with tone/body language)

You need a confidence shot!
Just my 2 cents.
Don't let them walk all over you.
So.. you’re the proud owner of a new PS5?

Lol my 6 year old did this to me recently. Bought $300 worth of games on amazon and then a photo book of all his goofy doodles, which I have to admit was pretty funny. He was at his dads house though, not being watched, so his dad paid me back. He knows better now, but I still cant help but laugh.
Hide your wallet. My step son used to pull crap like this. Not sure how old they are but the same rule also applies to booze and car keys.
JustA · 36-40, M
@Notladylike lol I have 2 teenagers and a pre teen. Car keys and alcoholic beverages are always out of reach. I just forgot I left my wallet there BUT I grounded them because I SHOULD be able to leave my stuff without worrying it'll disappear
@JustA Teenagers are horrible 😂 to be fair I was also at that age! Good luck with the grounding hope they listen
SkullsandBeauty · 26-30, F
let me guess you gave them a "gentle" warning? LOL.. is this the new generation of soft coddling parents?
CestManan · 46-50, F
@SkullsandBeauty Hell man on old TV shows, Junior could blow up a bus full of crippled nuns and the the worst that would happen would be the dad saying, "Now Junior, I am very disappointed in you but your mom and I still love you"

I never understood why MY dad wasn't so easy going.
@CestManan I heard the dad in Leave It to Beaver when I read that. Haha. It looked like something he would say.
CestManan · 46-50, F
@midnightrose Yeah and then Beaver talks to his wise big brother and everything is back to normal.

I guess in a way I am lucky cause my own older brother is the "Wally" type in that sense.
My dad was not some abusive asshole or anything, he just had a tendancy to bitch a lot.
Maybe if you weren't so cheap they wouldnt do it
CestManan · 46-50, F
@Nunlover He might just be so mad he cannot see straight.
Or maybe he smashed his phone in anger.

OR, the kids ordered some more stuff with his CC and he is trying to reverse that.
That would be the most hilarious scenario.
@CestManan true or maybe he didnt pay the wifi bill cause hes broke now 🤣
CestManan · 46-50, F
@Nunlover Maybe his wife canceled it because he racked up $756.25 on porn hub and here he is trying to blame the kids and say they bought stuff off Amazon.
curiosi · 61-69, F
Give them chores to work off their debt.
JustA · 36-40, M
@curiosi 😂
CestManan · 46-50, F
@curiosi Trying to get kids to do chores is like pulling teeth.
@CestManan Or herding cats.....
PerfectIllusion · 46-50, F
I thought you were going on your trip this weekend? How'd you forget your wallet?🤔
JustA · 36-40, M
@PerfectIllusion I actually have several wallets but decided I didn't need to take that one. The thing is, I thought I put that one away but because I was in such a hurry..I left it on the countertop. Their grandmother is staying at the house with them
PrincessOfQuilts · 36-40, F
Haha! Naughty kids, what did they buy ?
SW-User
I’d be beating some kids 😂
SkeetSkeet · 100+, F
You can cancel orders on Amazon hahaha
JustA · 36-40, M
@SkeetSkeet that's EXACTLY what I did
I don’t know how old your kids are, but either their purchases need to be returned or they should be assigned chores towards some kind of restitution. Why is it that they wouldn’t do this to their mother ? What does she demand from them that they don’t perceive you do ? 🙁
