CDC estimates 10,000 fewer legal abortions since Dobbs ruling

Since June, thousands of Americans have crossed state lines seeking abortion, like a pressure wave spreading out from a blast zone. A data set shared exclusively with FiveThirtyEight shows that in the two months after the Supreme Court decision, there were 10,570 fewer abortions as compared to pre-Dobbs estimates. That figure is a net, counting both declines in some states and increases in others, and it shows how a few states are absorbing some — but not all — of the demand for abortions in states where it’s now banned.

That topline number conceals an enormous amount of fluctuation between states. In all states that saw declines in their abortion numbers — which include the 15 states in which abortion was banned or severely limited over the summer — the number of abortions fell by about 22,000.1 Some of those women appear to have traveled out of state, because in other states, the number of abortions rose by an aggregate of about 12,000.

A likely consequence of longer wait times and travel distances is more abortions later in pregnancy. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that only 7.7 percent of all abortions happen between the 14th and 20th week of pregnancy. But between 20 and 30 percent of current patients are in the second trimester at Whole Woman's Health of Minnesota, a clinic located in a state where abortion is legal until the point of fetal viability around 25 weeks, according to Sean Mehl, Whole Woman's assistant director of clinical services.

Some women may also be getting abortions without any clinic or doctor being involved — although those numbers are hard to track. The #WeCount data counts only legal abortions, which means it’s almost certainly underestimating the total number. Even before Dobbs, activist groups and online pharmacies were providing abortion pills directly to consumers through the mail. By July, Mexican activists were already reporting that they were inundated with requests for abortion pills from women all over the U.S.

But it’s also likely that some people who might have gotten an abortion in the pre-Dobbs era are simply carrying their pregnancies to term. And while that is a victory for anti-abortion advocates, the #WeCount researchers noted that there is substantial evidence that being denied a wanted abortion puts people at an increased risk of poverty, physical abuse and certain health problems. They’re also keeping an eye on whether maternal and infant mortality will increase in states with abortion bans — particularly since those states tend to have higher-than-average rates of deaths from pregnancy complications.

Some interesting stats from
https://www.goodgoodgood.co/articles/how-to-reduce-abortions

In 2017, the abortion rate in the U.S. reached a historic low at 13.5 abortions per every 1,000 women aged 15-44. In 1973, when abortion became legal at the federal level with the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade, it was 16.5.

A 2016 analysis published in The Lancet found that the average abortion rate in countries where it’s outlawed is 37 per 1,000 women — and 34 per 1,000 in countries where it is legal. In other words, there’s no evidence that banning abortion reduces the number of abortions.

In 2011, nearly half of all pregnancies in the U.S. were unintended, which is significantly higher in the U.S. than in other developed countries. Of those unwanted pregnancies, nearly half ended in abortion. To prevent these pregnancies, folks need affordable access to contraceptive care.

Paid family leave is a critical component of reproductive healthcare, allowing parents to heal from childbirth, offer financial stability, and develop nurturing relationships and environments for their children.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, around 75% of abortion patients in 2014 had an income below the federal poverty level ($15,730 for a family of two) or were low-income (100-199% of the federal poverty level).

Guttmacher also found that one of the most common reasons given for having an abortion is that the person cannot afford a child or another child.

@ElwoodBlues I do realize that a lot of women some are raped, cannot afford to have children. Some are scared.and some just don't want children. Some of these are real reasons and some are just selfish and some are just plain irresponsible and selfish. Some are rape

Yes, contraception NEEDS to be affordable. And as a women we need to fight for womens rights to fair treatment and paid leaves from the workplace and paid time for days off for issues regarding children with more and better healthcare for women. This is what true strong women do for each other.

I believe no matter what, abortion still needs to be illegal. It is still ending the life of a human being who didn't ask to be conceived. Even in cases of rape and incest ( pregnancy is less than 1℅ of abortion ) of abortions done in this country, and some of these aren't reported. Those that are we need to fight like hell and DEMAND that these men receive harsher punishments than they do now. In cases of incest they need life sentence without pleading to lesser charge.

We need to make sure that women have everything they need to help and support them
A encourage them and definitely encourage adoption.

You and I both know that never happened in the US before, and it's not going to happen going forward.

Personally, I don't believe life begins at conception. Personally, I don't believe a fetus is "alive" during the first trimester, but it is during the 3rd trimester. I think the 2nd trimester is up for debate. I am willing to accept the Roe v Wade approach that abortion is legal up until the point a fetus can survive outside the womb.

@ElwoodBlues Not trying to be a smart ass but how can something develop if is not alive.. When is the very beginning of life? How does a human life develop to birth ? How can a something develop outside the womb as early as 21 weeks ? How and why are Drs able to do fetal surgeries on something that isn't alive ? What would be the point ?
@missyann No, it's a good question. Perhaps I should have said not a person instead of not alive. On the other hand, if something is frozen for 27 years, can it really be said to be alive for those 27 years?

@ElwoodBlues I believe that it is. The moment fertilization occurred a distinct human life with it's DNA which is completely different than the mother and father. Its suspended in animation but when its implanted and goes through the exact stages to birth. That is why I kind of question IVF. . what happens when some aren't used? A lot are destroyed. A lot of them are donated to science which I feel is wrong
@missyann The hypocrisy of the PL lobby is demonstrated by their focus on abortion while exempting IVF. Although some PL politicians have proposed banning it.

@missyann You missed the point, it seems.

Let me ask you this. Is a sunflower seed a plant? Is an acorn an oak tree? Don't tell me what they will eventually become. Tell me what they are. In the present moment.
missyann · 56-60
@LordShadowfire First of all I'm talking about a human life. . When an egg & sperm (seeds) are by themselves they are seeds alone. When they come together ( conception ) their seeds open up, meet each other and create a human life. When a sunflower seed and an acorn are planted they don't bloom into a pumpkin or cucumber. That was a dumb question.

I have a feeling you want me to say or try to prove before a life is born that they are a seed. Thats not going to happen because its not true
@missyann tell him why women don’t have funerals for miscarriages.

Go ahead .. make up some crazy sht
