What remains?

When you are dead, when your time ends, when you are gone... just memories, stuff for the flee market or ebay?
Well every single interaction you've ever had in your life at some level affects the person you interacted with which in turn in some way will affects the interactions they may have with someone else. So really after you die the ripple effect that you caused during your life could theoretically go on forever.

A ripple is all that remains?
@Dreammmer: Yep

That is my hope. Material things have little value to me except in how they help me stay connected to family and the world. My legacy, hopefully, will be happy memories.

Actually, I have little that is even worth selling on eBay. Not even at a flea market. What little I have might have some sentimental value to my kids....maybe.....but as what I'm talking about is my artwork and my writing, that is debatable, too. I know my youngest daughter will treasure almost anything that was once mine, but that's because she is extremely sentimental. The rest are more practical.

She won't even get anyone asking to look through my stuff before taking it all for herself, although she will be the kind to offer. Perhaps ONE of my granddaughter's might want something to remember me by, but as she already has lots that I've given her, probably not.

So. No. Most of my few possessions will go to a landfill.

Yes. But your life is more than what you possess. True?
Serenitree · F
@Dreammmer: yes. Which is what I have said in other responses on this thread. I hope my legacy will be happy memories, and strength to face and conquer adversity. As a parent and grandparent, that's the best I can hope for.

@Serenitree: Well said. I agree.

Sure. There are worse things then being a memory or "stuff"...or creating ripples that have effected people around you in some way.

Here's the thing. I don't want to be cared about or missed or remembered because I'm dead. But I'm good being remembered if it makes someone happy and reminds them to focus on living and being brilliant . I hope when I die, everyone will be good with it, made their peace with it and won't be too sad. Just as I'll have to content myself with what I've made of my life .

Truth.. but hopefully we leave an impact on others in a positive way.
Dreammmer · 56-60, M
Truth in the sense that you lived by the truth? I agree about the impact, even though the people blessed by your are not that many. Which is ok.
Malina · 51-55, F
True/truth in what you wrote. @Dreammmer:
You live on in the minds of those who love you.

The rest is taxes and dust.

@Dreammmer: now, you are going beyond me. I have never been much of a philosopher. I used Socrates and Plato, only because they were the first names that came to me....

But, yes. I do reduce them, and everyone who ever lived, to the teaching (memories) they left behind. I have no doubt that what they taught, their thoughts, were not original to them, but they are the names I've heard. My thoughts, although some of them feel like they are my original thoughts, have been formed by everything I've ever heard or read; by every person I've ever met or talked to, starting with my parents and at this point, continuing with this exchange with you. As long as I breathe, as long as I can still think, I hope to never stop learning and growing. And I hope that every day a small bit of my learning will be passed on to others. We all want to leave something behind.

That's why everyone wants their fifteen minutes of fame. I want so much more than that. I want to live on in the hearts and minds of all those I've ever touched. I just hope I leave behind more good than bad.

@Serenitree: Im sure you do. But then it is not in your power, I attribute that to God. He is the creator and your longing and desire is part of his original design, I think. Thank you for your lovely reply, it is much appreciated. You are a great person, the way you respond betrays you. and now I am glad we met and that you are very much alive still.
@Dreammmer: god ? which one ?

Sad but true. My heart hurts reading this

Please explain why...

We move on to a new planet and start over as a baby.
Dreammmer · 56-60, M
I think you missed the question.
LoveChild · 26-30, F
@Dreammmer: No, you missed the answer. You're asking what remains of self, but you didn't specify where. Nothing remains locally for long- but self endures none the less.
sighmeupforthat · 46-50, M
that's why you get involved.
CzarNmetb · 26-30, M
Nothing really.
Dreammmer · 56-60, M
Because you collect so many things?
yes
