I think it depends on what age you start learning it. I learned it as a child so I picked it up very easily but my mother has been taking English classes for over 15+ years and while she's typically the most fluent one in her class and can understand and read in English very well she's still not very fluent in speaking it. However, she didn't start trying to learn until she was in her 30s whereas I started at 4 years old so I'm sure age makes a difference.

It is more difficult that it should be because there are so many exceptions to its rules, and there are so many originally non-English words that have become part of it without their spellings being adapted to English phonetic rules.

You're so right. I feel bad for the ESL students.

Depends on what native language you're coming from.

@Moonlite17: I would guess that it would be of moderate difficulty then.

It's not too hard to learn to speak, but reading and writing is a pain.
So many things spelled the same and sound the same but have different meanings. Others spelled the same but sound different and then there are the different spellings that sound the same but mean different things.
And worst of all, the wrong spelling can totally change the meaning of the sentence.

Definitely. I was lucky to have immigrated to the United States at a young age, otherwise I would be struggling like my parents to fully grasp English.

@Moonlite17: If you started at 11, you will not have a problem, especially if you spend time in an English-speaking country.

@crossproduct: Thank you ma'am! That makes me glad :)
No, I done it when I was a toddler 😏

I'm going to say "yes."

It's easy to learn to speak it badly, but a lot of work to learn how to speak it well. My native Russian-speaking husband is a wizard at English but he was a very dedicated perfectionist.

I am told that it is, but you are still young enough to learn it really well..
You seem to be doing OK so far.. :)

I've heard it's middle of the road when it comes to new languages as an adult

It wasn't for me but I learned at a young age.

Apparently so by the looks of this question

No. But it is a difficult language to master.
