Can you all explain why my GTA joke isn't landing with people?
So today was the 2nd time i made a GTA joke with an American woman in 1MG Lido mall of Trinity Circle of our city Bangalore in India. She is a tourist tho not an expat. So I Socialized with her. So her name is actually Amanda so I thought of bantering a bit so I asked her "Ohh so you are Michael's wife Amanda from GTA 5?" and laughed. I thought we would have a shared laugh as GTA 5 has been a very popular video game but she was confused and asked "Oh what's that?" So yeah I had to explain her that it's Grand Theft Auto 5 and that it's a video game and Michael is a protagonist in the game and Amanda is his wife. Then she understood and said "Ohh we have the same name". And I was a bit embarrassed and just said her "Yeah. Just an awkward joke I guess" and laughed a bit and eventually wished her a great day before moving.
Something similar happened with another American expat woman in Church Street last month whose name happened to be Amanda too and I made the same GTA 5 banter asking whether she is Michael's wife and it didn't land. Do you feel my GTA 5 joke is bad? Be honest. Is it immature or geeky for my age(25)? Why aren't they landing well with people despite the game itself being popular?
