Copy paste from google
"Licorice is a perennial herb that is cultivated throughout Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. It is used as a flavoring in candy, other foods, and tobacco products. Many “licorice” products sold in the United States do not contain actual licorice. Anise oil, which smells and tastes like licorice, is often used instead."
@TheRealBarbossa oh, so the Americans aren't bashing licorice, but their own inferior imitation of it... I shouldn't be surprised about these things anymore. 😅

@NerdyPotato as far as I know they're the only ones who call it "black licorice" while we call it just "licorice"

A friend of mine loves black liquorice. Sadly black liquorice hates him and gives him the worst gas imaginable. He was able to clear an entire room with his liquorice stink. PHEW! His wife told him that either the liquorice goes or she does. They are still together

Well hmmmp 😤
It depends on the kind. There's so many variations of black liquorice. You probably just had the wrong one for your taste.
