This question is funny and serious at the same time. Funny because I'm 57 and still asking myself the same question.
I'm following this post/question and I'm interested in the answers.
I should begin by saying there's no right or wrong answer. And I believe each person is responsible for finding their own answer.
There are probably as many answers as there are people.
In my faith (Christian) what you believe and who you spend your time being with, being in character matters more that the job title: who you are as a person (character) In Christianity we should follow the example of Jesus. He was a person who was honest, cared about others, and spoke against hipocracy, tried to help others understand how to live life using simple proverbs. The rest of your actions ought to support your inner most beliefs, then family, then community. If you have a special gift or skill, lean towards activities that allow you to use your skill set, and be able to feed and support yourself in life to the best of your ability. If you are successful financially then hopefully you will have an abundance to share and inspire others in your circle

I took a civil service exam when I was about 20. Got called and worked for CPS (Children's Protective Services) for 30 years. Made a nice living and pension for myself and family.

@robbie2499 oh sweet you’re so lucky
robbie2499 · 61-69, F
@Ferise1 I truly was. It was the best move for me at the time, and it worked out so well.

On not having a skill set.
Ask yourself: when I meet a person or interact with any person, what is it about them that I like the most? is it their job or is it how they treat me?
There is a famous quote that people don't remember your name, but they remember how you treated them. Therefore, there is a school of thought that how you treat people matters more and also how you treat yourself (what you do to care for yourself) matters more than any skill set

Honestly I feel like I had to force myself to settle into what others expected me to do. Never had much of a drive to chase any passions. It kind of always felt like it was the mindset that "this is what people do so I guess I should do it". I always hated the question "if you could do anything what would you do?"

Plumbers, electricians, pipe fitters, etc have unions and apprenticeships.
Welders, HVAC techs, Truck Drivers, Airplane mechanics, auto mechanics, diesel mechanics, etc have VoTech schools
All kinds of opportunities out there .. never too late

@BrandNewMan yes well I never heard of those before
I thought I was destined to university, but I just couldn’t cope
And now it’s too late

@Ferise1 You have what .. 15-20 yrs left to work? Its NOT too late. My soon to be Ex-Wife just completed a master's degree at 54 .. my brother did it at 48. I am looking at possibly doing a certified financial planner program at 61, likely 62 before I can actually start it, to have something after retiring from my first career.
You could absolutely go to a 1 to 2 yr program for truck driving .. welding .. HVAC tech or even for an associate degree in something else . and it readily more than pay you back for doing so
