Is SW a faithful cross section of the world outside the app?

"Faithful" cross section? Hmm... I think it could be every which way from one extreme to the next, going by observations over the years plus some I have known more closely for many years, yet...

I believe many come here to act out or behave in ways what they can't or don't in the real world. Which can defo leave the thought of the people on the street, in the grocery isle that you interact with, being "one of those extreme SW members and he's wearing a full diaper right now!". Yikes.

We really don't know people on here like maybe we think we do. As was said, we get glimpses.

I think SW is likely to draw people who have things going on in their lives that they are only comfortable sharing anonymously. If so it is not a representative cross section of society, just of the more interesting people in it 😀
But you are still right that you never know what is really going on in someone else's head, or in their life.

What is though a faithful cross section of the world outside? I'm not sure that we are even alike at times. Take the subject matter on the daily news. Who watches television coverage at both ends? Are we indeed general informed enough to even aspire to be in main stream of opinion? As a religious nut but non-American I refuse however to ever pray for Trump. There's much in that statement alone. As in stating that I'm a conservative

You might get glimpses but you rarely know who people are here either. So whether SW draws in a unique set of people or is just a microcosm of society is really anyone’s guess.

Well, even I don't agree about the app part, but it's not as effective as I thought. I don't know about you but I don't need a bunch of random new people and drama on this site.

No I think you're right as I've ran into people that work at like Best buy or a restaurant that have ended up being into some crazy stuff lol. So I think there really are people on here that you probably have ran into or COULD run into in person.

Some people here are real and some aren't. Some of us are living on past memories that we cherish and can't continue for one reason or other. But as irl there are those who delight in judging you.

I do not think this is a representative cross section at all.

There are plenty of people who have no interest in social media involving anonymous strangers.

I have always known that SW was a cross-section of the real world out there, not a place where the different or the unique congregate after breakfast every morning, which by the way included blueberries, bananas, oatmeal and skim milk for me, proceeded by not one but two cups of coffee if you're taking notes.

I spearheaded an informal study on human behavior after I'd started my 2nd year of university when I was 19 years old. There was myself and 5 other girls conducting this study after I had hypothesized to my English Prof that people are exactly the same face to face with others, as they are when they're hiding behind a computer screen and largely unknown to the world.

He said no, I'm wrong.. so of course I had to prove it to him which was his ulterior motive in the first place to see what I would do about it!

I asserted that 'how' a person reacts to a question while face to face in the real world, he/she will react to exactly the same way while hiding behind their computer screen. That was the basis of my hypothesis.

The fact that we can hide doesn't change the fundamental core of our personality, nor does it change how we express ourselves about sex for example.

To keep this shorter than usual, what I proved in the end using random samplings from volunteers on campus, was that if you cannot tell someone face to face what you feel about some aspect of sex, you will not be able to speak your truth about sex while hiding behind a computer screen writing your reply instead of verbalizing it to someone. If you can't say it, you can't write it either.

When you hear people on SW talking openly about cross-dressing, about their diaper fetish, about their toileting issues and about what they want everyone in the world to know what they had for breakfast that day, they are showing you WHO they are and WHAT they're all about and how they actually talk or behave in the 'real world' offline, as well as online.

If they openly speak their mind here on SW, they will also openly speak their mind out there without hesitation. If they can't say it in here, they definitely won't say it out there either.

I actually agree that this a microcosm of the real world, with people living average lives offline. They make time for SW the same way they do other social media. That’s just how things are now.

I don’t really care what SW pretends to be. I simply come here to kill a bit of time and hopefully respond to a couple of people I like personally.

I really don’t worry about character because I trust my own.

I've wondered the same thing. I have no idea.

I'm exactly the same IRL. what you see is what you get.

I honestly think the majority of people here are the ones you never meet IRL because they have no friends, and receive money from the government instead of working.

SW is whatever you want it to be.
