I believe it’s the only way to get people off the streets and help them get on their feet. It makes no sense for people to complain about the homeless problem but do nothing to alleviate the issue.

@SatanBurger wasnt it smelling. sorry just my idea of shelters is not too great
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@NinaCherry I dunno. I didn't really get past the lady enough to look around inside. It was a big warehouse like structure in the middle of a city somewhere but I know they were legit because I looked it up.

But yeah I told the lady no thanks, on second thought I'll take my chance. She got really snotty and laughed at me when I asked if they had job services, I could tell by her little uppity attitude I didn't want to be there.

It's a complex issue, with profound humanitarian implications in our modern greed-based society.
I lived on the streets and in the bush for about ten years,so I have a nuanced view of this issue.
Supportive mental health/addiction case management in conjunction with free housing seems a promising way to alleviate the crisis.
Work training and community volunteer projects would be a logical aspect of such a project as well.
I have more questions than answers at this point, but action needs to be taken.

Free housing for all.

Absolutely. It’s better than allowing people to have to be homeless. Here, I understand it used to be part of public assistance. It wasn’t completely free, but a small part of the monthly stipend went towards housing, and the rest of the rent was covered by the state.
NinaCherry · 26-30, F
@bijouxbroussard like, think of, those ridiculous child support payments these rich guys are making. and its LEGAL. so they believe 10k would be better allotted to a mute baby than to the homeless?!
@NinaCherry Child support I understand. People should support the child they make. What I don’t understand in this day and age is alimony. Giving a grown person a monthly check because you used to be married. If you helped the person make their wealth (worked while they went to school, for example) then yeah, you should get a big chunk. But otherwise, why ?
NinaCherry · 26-30, F
@bijouxbroussard nope i meant those ridiculous child support payments. like 10k or whatever. and thats only 1 example of how money gets misused, but i cant think of anymore right now
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
No exactly "free", but I support housing for the homeless/poor with the caveat that if they are physically/mentally capable of working they do some kind of public service in return for the housing. Even just a few hours a week if that's all they can manage.
Elessar · 26-30, M
We do have them, but it needs to be something well implemented or it'll be just a waste of money that will get abused.
NinaCherry · 26-30, F
@Elessar yeah. it must be organized so that it doesnt get abused. i know because ive been jacking food for the druggies myself.
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
Yup. Without a doubt. There's whole entire cities that have been abandoned and the houses are just boarded up sitting there and that's about it. So it's more of a waste on the taxpayer to not do anything about abandoned buildings than it would be to just renovate them for public use and put it to good use.

Housing should be available for all.
Maybe not that much, but it's amazing how a free rental suit for a week can help to get a job for example. A lot of homeless people are willing to improve, but are stuck in a catch 22. Just a little help to break the cycle can lift them into an upward spiral.
NinaCherry · 26-30, F
@NerdyPotato sure. there r lots of degenerated ppl but i know for a fact some ppl just need just lil bit of help
No - and we don't want housing for free, either.

We don't want shipping container homes that are hotter than Hell in summer and freezing cold in the winter - damp and mold are real issues and, once they set in, throwing out the little you had is the only cure.

Somewhere cool in the summer and warm in the colder months would be nice - along with an address that we can put on job applications... and access to the Internet so we can apply for work.
oldercanuck1 · 70-79, M
i agree to help those that once worked and contributed to the country and lost their home be cause of the times or bad in vestments but those that have not worked and left home when a teen and have never did anything but live off the goodness of others, no ,, no matter the reason being a vagrant is a way of life that hurts those that work for a living ,,
@oldercanuck1 if you've lived history and don't understand the consequences of rounding up people into camps and letting them die if they don't conform to your ideals, you've missed some very important details.
@oldercanuck1 and about not working for things like you did:

oldercanuck1 · 70-79, M
@NerdyPotato you are correct it is not about me ..and i trier of your turning my statements around to make me look bad and you to look like the savior of the down and out .this is the last we will chat ,,, have a great life and try and ruin someone elses day ,,,
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
Definitely but only for a certain period of time. Especially in a case of disaster. Where are these people supposed to go?
NinaCherry · 26-30, F
@CrazyMusicLover yeah like when u lose a job
Always do something that will help people in real need but has to be some kind of limits.
Starcrossed · 41-45, F
Absolutely.
Absolutely I do but it should be limited for anyone - not just those that fit a criteria. Too many people take advantage of it.

I took this last weekend at a metro in Berlin. I liked it, it shows a historical point in time
