But I somehow feel the brain itself sometimes rejects this notion, psychologically, and so a biological male behaves as if it is female.

And to make it more complex too, in the early stages of development in the womb, chromosomes can change from XY to XX, caused by chemical changes or irradiation (of Cosmic Rays or radioactive rocks, or Argon in the atmosphere).Hence the emergence of hermaphroditism.

If you read the article this mentality is excessively exclusionary.
@Aidan I confess I am out of my depth here. But am lead to believe it is more complex than meets the eye.
