What's the best advice you've ever received?

Throughout your life, you've likely received plenty of advice from various sources. However, what's the best piece of advice you've ever been given? Was it from a family member, friend, mentor, or even a stranger? How has this advice impacted your life, and do you still follow it to this day?

If you come across a toilet in your dreams. Don't use it.

The best advice I've got was from a man in a facebook group, I don't remember the group but it probably was of stoic/ philosophical / life advice content. We probably discussed life and life struggles when he told me:

"Never base your life decisions on someone who won't have to live with the consequences"

@Queendragonfly That is really good advice.
NiceShoes · 31-35, M
Obviously you've not received good enough advices from people since you attack and slander ppl based upon nothing.
Things like that will come back to you.
Nevaeh0081 · 36-40, F
Things are not gonna go your way. People are not going to automatically like you. That's life. You're gonna have to learn to live with it.

My grandfather sat me down and warned me about spending money I didn't have. To buy only what I had cash to buy. I didn't listen, but I remembered years later.

I had credit card dept that was around $100,000 USD, years after his death, and I worked hard to eliminate it. Only to buy a house on credit... An investment I told myself...

I still tell myself that, and I think it'll work out, but I remember his advise and I know it for truth.

I haven't had debt for a long time, until I had to fight for custody of my son. Now I have debt again, and I think my grandfather would agree that it was worth the cost.

I don't always know what choices were right, but this one... I know. Grandfather told me to spend only what I had in my pocket. It was good advice. Money comes and goes, use it for what is important.... That is my advice to my son.

Two things:

My dad told me "they had to put it together somehow". He was referring to taking apart a piece of machinery. I have applied to all kinds of other situations.

My old neighbour once askes "Are you stuck or do you want to be there". I apply both of them to my life constantly.

NiceShoes · 31-35, M
@Iwantout That might have to do with the dynamics you are in more than just other people.

On the Saturday that I got my driver's license, I was getting the keys to the family car from my father to have my first "alone" date with my girlfriend. He said, "Remember that, when she is in the car with you, she is the most important person in the world."

My 11th grade vocational teacher was a strange man who used to lay on his desk alot because of back problems told us that 9 times out of 10 if something bad happens to you, there is only yourself to blame. It's always stuck..

My Dad used to say, "If you can't handle the drumsticks don't play in the band." Always liked that one. Appropriate for a lot of situations.

My Dad - In life you need to Believe in something, anything.
Did I take it to heart.., yes till this very day.

There's not a single best advice to me, it all builds upon what's already established and makes it better. One advice I got from my teachers though, which I think is quite thought provoking is to always do everything the best you can and be honest. Do not cheat with anything. But if you do decide to cheat, do it the best you can and do not half-ass it.
JohnnySpot · 56-60, M
@MartinTheFirst provoking a vague criticism of your comment for learning purposes.
