I never like confrontation

As I have mentioned previously, I live in a block of units and my common wall neighbour is from India.
For the previous 6 months he has been playing the drums. The kind that are played with the hands. Tabla.
This is very annoying as he plays them for at least 2 hours at night, sometimes 3 hours.
Tonight I am asleep at 9.30, I rise for work at 5am. He starts playing the drums and wakes me up.
I finally said to myself, "This is not on" so I went and knocked on his door, he did not hear me so I bang on his window.
He comes to the door and I say that I have put up with his nightly drumming for 6 months but I have had enough.
(Condensed version) - "You live in a block of units surrounded by neighbours. You never hear anything from them. Show some respect for your neighbours"
He said, "I understand, sorry, sorry, sorry."
I go back to bed and relate my story here.

Well hopefully he learned. I have “shared” my music with neighbors after they did the same for me and our other neighbors in the 8-unit apartment building. If they like rock music they probably aren’t going to appreciate Classical music if it’s cranked up at 8 or 9 a.m.

@cherokeepatti It shows a lack of respect by them and sometimes we need to take a stand.

@Gusman I live in a university city and it got so bad with so many residents speaking out in front of the city council that they passed a party-house ordinance and if the police come out at night due to noise they can cite the owners of the residence and fine them heavily. Frat boys were going together and renting apartments to party in since they couldn’t drink At the frat parties if they were underage and they would use it for parties or to bring their girlfriends. One of their neighbors told me a long time ago there was never a day or night without a lot of noise.

It’s not necessarily a lack of respect. Some are just clueless about consideration of others. If you had mentioned it to him 6-months ago that it was keeping you awake, he probably would have had the same good attitude. People don’t know there is a problem until you let them know. @Gusman

So has the drumming stopped?
Do you own or rent?
Talk to the rental agent or owner.
Check out the rules of the strata or body corporate.
You have a right to peace and quiet.

@KiwiBird He stopped drumming
I am renting, as is he. I will only go to the agent if he continues to play the drums at night.
The lease states that every tenant has the right to peaceful enjoyment of their environment.

@Gusman Sounds like a good result. You put up with this for six months? Why? Sounds like it could have been resolved much earlier if you had just had this conversation.

Anyway I hope peaceful nights endure.
Gusman · 61-69, M
@KiwiBird This is the first time he has started so late. Usually he starts at around 6pm.
Plus he woke me up.

Hang a metal plate against the wall and hit it with hammers like you would playing the drums everytime he plays his
Gusman · 61-69, M
@Jamesy I never thought of hanging something on the wall to hit. I thought about hitting my wall with a hammer but that would only damage my wall.
Anyway, he stopped immediately

Hope he stopped playing the drums after that? Sounds like a mannerless guy
Gusman · 61-69, M
@solitaire He did stop immediately. Took me over an hour and a half to get back to sleep.

I'm from India btw. Even here we won't tolerate this. Personally I haven't faced such a situation.@Gusman

9:30pm is pretty late for drums. Kudos for confronting him! 👍🥰
